Summary

Overview

Suntribe is a Swedish maker of mineral-based sunscreens, based in Lund and tied to Lund University for formula development [11]. The company was founded in 2016 by three friends — Karl Roos, Julia Beyer and Hampus Tarras-Wahlberg — who met during a master's program in entrepreneurship at Lund University [2]. It builds its products around non-nano zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, positioning them as natural alternatives to conventional chemical sunscreens, and sells directly to consumers and businesses across Europe and worldwide.

The brand remains active. Its storefront carries a current product catalogue with pricing in Swedish kronor and ships worldwide from a Swedish warehouse, and it runs an ongoing ambassador program with water-sports athletes.

Origin & founders

The idea traces back to Karl Roos, who began noticing the problems with conventional sunscreens while working as a surf instructor in Portugal. As Julia Beyer recalled it, "when we three met and researched the topic, we decided to offer a completely natural and safe sunscreen alternative ourselves" [7]. Tarras-Wahlberg has described the origin more informally, remembering seeing Roos in a university cafeteria sketching "an idea he had about a sustainable sunscreen company" [8].

The three founders came from different backgrounds. Beyer, born and raised in Munich, moved to Sweden for the same entrepreneurship master's and became head of product development, splitting her time between Sweden and Portugal. Tarras-Wahlberg had earlier run a jewellery import business, Fray Camilo, sourced from Chile. Roos is listed as the company's CEO and founder.

There is a distinction worth noting in the brand's timeline. The company dates its founding to 2016 [2], while its first product — a mineral body sunscreen — was launched in a press release dated March 2018 [12]. Both dates are accurate for different stages: 2016 marks the company's start, 2018 the first commercial launch.

History & milestones

Suntribe's first product was a non-whitening mineral body sunscreen using zinc oxide as the UV filter, offering SPF 30 and broad-spectrum protection with between three and seven ingredients [12]. In July 2020 the company launched a new range packaged in a climate-neutral sugarcane biomaterial, an expansion covered by the Ideon Science Park in Lund [11].

Philosophy & positioning

The company describes its mission as helping people switch from chemical to mineral sunscreens, and says it creates "worry-free natural sunscreens that are 100% free from synthetic chemicals" [2]. It operates on a "less is more" ingredient approach and states that it will not add synthetic chemicals simply because they are cheaper. According to Suntribe, its formulas use between three and nine ingredients, compared with what it cites as an industry average of 27.

In an interview, Beyer identified greenwashing as the sector's central problem — companies marketing products as "reef-safe" without verified certification — and pointed consumers toward independent ingredient-checking apps such as Think Dirty, INCI Beauty and Yuka.

Products & innovation

Suntribe's catalogue centres on sun protection, organised into all-round sunscreens, sports sunscreens and daily skincare. Signature items include the Organic Mineral UV Shield SPF 50, the Organic Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30, a Baby & Kids SPF 30 formula, a Zinc Sun Stick SPF 50 and an Organic Mineral Day Cream SPF 20.

The products are built on uncoated, non-nano zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, alongside ingredients such as aloe vera, sunflower seed oil, vitamin E, jojoba oil and iron oxides. The company says its sunscreens are entirely free from nanoparticles and that its formulas contain sunflower seed oil and vitamin E to absorb free radicals. Formulas are developed with Lund University, where quality controls are also carried out [12], and SPF, UVA and water-resistance testing is conducted with independent laboratories in the EU and the United States [10]. The brand describes its products as vegan and fragrance-free.

Sustainability

Sustainability sits at the centre of the brand's positioning. Suntribe ships without plastic, describes its formulations as reef-safe, and avoids soy wax and palm oil on sustainability grounds [3]. Some packaging uses metal containers made with 56% recycled content that the company says are fully recyclable. It also partners with the reforestation organisation One Tree Planted, planting one tree for each aluminium tin sold of selected products [5]. Manufacturing takes place at what the company calls a GMP-certified facility in Europe, with ingredients sourced from the nearest geographical location to that site.

Recognition

Suntribe has been featured across European and international press, including Harper's Bazaar Deutschland, Elle Deutschland, Brigitte, The Independent, Country Living UK, Cosmopolitan France and Euronews, as well as an editor's pick by Organic Authority and a listing in the Environmental Working Group's product database. The brand also runs an ambassador program with competitive water-sports athletes, among them longboard champion Raquel "Raka" Bento of Portugal, Big Air vice world champion Francesca Maini of the United Kingdom, and world bodyboarding champion Anne-Cécile Lacoste of France.
