Summary

Overview

The Real Shaving Co is a British men's grooming brand based in Somerset, England, producing shaving creams, face washes, scrubs and moisturisers. Trade-press coverage dates the brand's founding to 2002 [4], though its marketing has long leaned on a "since 1953" barbershop-heritage positioning. The brand is no longer an independent company: its ownership has passed through several corporate hands, and the UK legal entity that carried its name was dissolved in 2024. Its products continue to be sold through retailers in the UK and abroad.

Origin & founding

The company presents itself around a barbershop-heritage story, claiming a lineage "since 1953" [5]. Corporate records tell a different, more recent story. According to Insider Media, The Real Shaving Company was founded in 2002 as a male grooming brand [4]. UK Companies House records show that the legal entity behind it was incorporated in 1998 under the name BROOMCO (1585) LIMITED, renamed SUAVIS LIMITED shortly afterwards, and only took the name THE REAL SHAVING COMPANY LIMITED on 11 February 2003 [3]. On this basis, the packet treats 2002 as the factual founding year and reads the "since 1953" claim as heritage marketing rather than a company age.

Ownership

Ownership of the brand has changed hands repeatedly. It was originally held by Creightons plc. In May 2015, the Somerset-based manufacturer Swallowfield plc agreed to acquire it, completing the purchase on 29 May 2015 for GBP 1.15 million — GBP 1 million in cash plus GBP 150,000 in stock, part-financed by a five-year HSBC loan [4]. At the time of the deal, Swallowfield's chief executive Chris How described it as a "well-established and well-loved brand" that fit the company's strategy of expanding its branded business [1].

Swallowfield later rebranded as Brand Architekts. In February 2025, Brand Architekts itself was acquired by Warpaint London plc, transferring indirect ownership of the brand once again [2]. Notably, The Real Shaving Co does not appear among the four brands Brand Architekts highlights on its current about page — Skin & Tan, Dirty Works, Super Facialist and Fish Soho [2].

Products & positioning

The range centres on men's shaving and skincare: shaving creams and gels, face washes and scrubs, post-shave balms and moisturisers, grouped into lines the brand markets as Age Denying, Rejuvenating and Sensitive. Named products include the Rejuvenating Face Wash & Scrub, the Anti Ageing Sensitive Moisturiser and the Age Defence Traditional Shave Cream.

Several formulations are built around what the company calls a "Skin-Defence complex," described as blending Vitamin E and pea peptides for moisturising and firming, alongside ingredients such as provitamin B5, aloe vera and willow bark extract. The company says its products are free from parabens, SLS and SLES, and that they are certified cruelty-free by PETA [5]. While some retailer copy frames the range as premium, its typical price points of roughly GBP 5–7 place it in accessible, drugstore-tier territory.

Distribution has been multi-channel from early on: the brand has been sold through UK supermarkets and health-and-beauty retailers, as well as in Canada and France, and it continues to appear at retailers including Boots and Amazon.

Current status

The brand is best described as acquired and in a low-investment, run-off state rather than actively developed. The UK trading entity, THE REAL SHAVING COMPANY LIMITED, had been classified as dormant and was formally dissolved on 9 July 2024 [3]. Its listed website, realshaving.com, redirects to Amazon UK search results rather than a proprietary storefront, and the brand's page on the parent company's site is no longer live. Even so, its products remain in stock across several markets, and its social accounts — including an Instagram profile under @realshavingco — remain online.
