Summary

Overview

Ardell is an American beauty brand best known for false eyelashes, founded in the United States in 1971 [5]. It launched with Duralashes, a set of individual faux lashes, and the name itself is a portmanteau of its founders' first names: husband-and-wife Arnold and Sydell Miller combined "Ar" and "dell" to create it [6]. The brand has been owned since the early 1980s by American International Industries (AII), a Los Angeles personal-care manufacturer; in industry terms Ardell is an acquired brand rather than an independent company, though the lash line itself remains fully active.

Today the range spans lashes, brow products, nail products and lash adhesives, sold across general retail and beauty-supply channels. According to trade press, Ardell has grown into the dominant name in its core category.

Thinner sourcing. The article relies largely on the brand's own statements (T2–T3). Glowpedia is seeking independent sources.

Origin and founders

The brand was established in 1971 by Arnold Miller and his wife Sydell. The couple's stated aim was simple — to help women enhance their eyes and create memorable looks — and they built the name from their own, joining the first syllables of Arnold and Sydell [6]. The debut product, Duralashes, was a system of individual lashes; the niche editorial source FalseEyelashes.co.uk notes it remained a popular fixture of the Ardell range decades later.

Ownership

Ardell is owned by American International Industries, which describes itself as a manufacturer and distributor of beauty and skincare products spanning more than 60 brands. The acquisition date is recorded differently across sources. Women's Wear Daily reports that AII president Zvi Ryzman bought the brand in 1983, citing his own account of the sale: "When he sold it to me in 1983 he asked me for a vow that I would have a cosmetics line using Ardell's name" [6]. FalseEyelashes.co.uk instead dates the purchase to 1980 [5]. The first-person quote in WWD makes 1983 the higher-confidence date, though the discrepancy is noted.

Within AII's portfolio, Ardell sits in the company's lashes division alongside brands such as Andrea and DUO, and in nail and grooming lines including China Glaze, Seche and Clubman. AII says its products reach retail, beauty-supply, grocery and specialty markets in more than 180 countries [4].

Products and positioning

Ardell positions itself, in its own words, as "the leader of false lashes worldwide, with the largest selection of high-quality lashes for every style and every occasion." Its catalogue covers strip lashes, individual lashes, brow tints and styling tools, nail products and adhesives.

Several products anchor the line. The Wispies are described by the company as the signature style "that MUAs can't live without," and the Demi Wispies are cited by editorial coverage as a bestseller. The DUO Adhesive is marketed by the brand as "the world's best selling lash glue" [2]. Faux Mink and Natural lash collections round out the range, with the faux-mink lashes made from synthetic fibres rather than animal fur.

The brand operates at drugstore price points and reaches consumers through a multi-channel model. WWD notes that when Ardell expanded into colour cosmetics — mascaras, a brow pen, an eyeshadow stick and a lipstick — it launched those products exclusively at Sally Beauty before a wider rollout, with prices ranging from roughly seven to fifteen US dollars [6].

Ethics

Ardell is described as cruelty-free: the ethics site Conscious Bunny states the brand does not test finished products or ingredients on animals, and that its suppliers and third parties do not either [7]. The same source notes the brand is not fully vegan, as some products may contain animal-derived ingredients.

Whether Ardell holds a formal Leaping Bunny certification is disputed. Conscious Bunny states the brand "is not certified by any organization" [7], while aggregated third-party sources claim it has been Leaping Bunny certified since 2019 [8]. Because the two accounts conflict, the certification is not recorded here as confirmed.

Recognition

Ardell's standing in its category is documented chiefly through trade press. In a feature on the brand's move into colour cosmetics, WWD reported that, per IRI market data, Ardell "is said to be larger than all of its competitors combined" in the artificial-lash segment, with false-eyelash and adhesive sales rising 38.5 percent against category growth of 30 percent [6].

Current status

Ardell is an active brand. It is owned by American International Industries, which acquired it in the early 1980s, and it runs a direct-to-consumer store (ardellshop.com) carrying current product lines and promotions. Its "acquired" classification reflects ownership structure rather than any wind-down: the lash brand continues to operate and is distributed internationally through its parent company.
