Overview
Boucheron is a French luxury jewelry, watch, and fragrance house founded in Paris in 1858 by Frédéric Boucheron [1]. Long a family business based at 26 Place Vendôme, it is today owned by the luxury group Kering, which acquired it through a chain of ownership changes between 1994 and 2004 [1]. While the Maison is best known for high jewelry and watchmaking, its presence in the beauty world rests on a fragrance line first launched in 1988 and produced under licence since 2011.
Boucheron continues to operate as a fully active house under Kering, with boutiques worldwide and an ongoing fragrance programme; in encyclopedic terms its status is best described as acquired rather than independent.

Origin and founders
Frédéric Boucheron opened his first store in 1858 in the Galerie de Valois at the Palais-Royal, during the Second French Empire. According to the company, he set out to create unique pieces and push the boundaries of jewelry design [3]. He established his own atelier in 1866, and from the 1860s onward the designer Paul Legrand shaped much of the early style, pairing pearls with diamond rondelles.
In 1893 Boucheron became the first jeweler to settle on Place Vendôme, taking No. 26, the Hôtel de Nocé. The brand recounts that Frédéric Boucheron chose this corner for its strategic position between the new Opéra Garnier district and the Tuileries Gardens; by a frequently repeated legend, it was also the sunniest corner of the square, so that the diamonds in the windows would sparkle more brilliantly.
History and milestones
The house gained early recognition at the great international fairs, winning a Gold Medal at the 1867 Exposition Universelle and a Grand Prix for Outstanding Innovation at the 1889 World's Fair, the latter linked to a clasp-less necklace developed a decade earlier. Expansion followed quickly: a Moscow opening accompanied the move to Place Vendôme in 1893, with London and New York stores added in 1903.
Across its history Boucheron drew an international clientele that included the Maharaja of Patiala and Queen Rania of Jordan; a tiara commissioned in 1921 for Lady Greville later passed to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother [1]. The building at 26 Place Vendôme was listed as a historical monument in 1930, and the boutique reopened at the end of 2018 after a complete renovation [3].
Ownership
Boucheron remained a family enterprise until 1994, when it was sold to Schweizerhall [1]. It was acquired by Gucci in 2000, and in 2004 PPR purchased Gucci, bringing Boucheron into the group that PPR would later rename Kering [1]. Within Kering's portfolio it sits alongside houses such as Gucci, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, and Brioni.
Philosophy and positioning
Products and innovation
The house works primarily in fine jewelry and watches, with fragrance forming its beauty-relevant line. Its first fragrance, also named Boucheron, appeared in 1988, and the marque has since extended across more than twenty men's and women's scents [1]. Rather than producing perfumes in-house, Boucheron licenses its name: Interparfums (Inter Parfums SA) has managed the fragrances since 2011 [1].
In jewelry, Boucheron has pursued occasional technical collaborations, including work with the research institute IRCAM on the 2023 Quatre 5D Memory ring, which used 5D optical storage technology for long-term data preservation.
Recognition
Boucheron's early jewelry earned formal distinctions at the nineteenth-century world's fairs, among them the 1867 Gold Medal at the Exposition Universelle and the 1889 Grand Prix for Outstanding Innovation.
Current status
Boucheron is an active global luxury house owned by Kering, operating boutiques internationally. Its beauty business runs through an exclusive worldwide fragrance licence with Interparfums that began on 1 January 2011, replacing a prior agreement with L'Oréal that ended by mutual consent [2]. According to filings tied to that agreement, the licence was set to run through the end of 2025 with an automatic five-year renewal, to 2030, if sales targets were met [2]. The most recent notable activity recorded in the available sources is the 2023 Quatre 5D Memory ring [1].
