Summary

Overview

Bottega Veneta is an Italian luxury house established in Vicenza, Italy, in 1966. It built its reputation on leather goods and the Intrecciato woven-leather technique, and has been part of the French group Kering since 2001. While the house is best known for fashion, its presence in beauty is a fragrance line — first produced under licence and, since 2024, developed in-house. The brand remains active: its scents began rolling out at retail in the United States in 2025.

The company operates under the guiding principle "Labor et Ingenium," which it translates as craft and ingenuity, and a discreet ethos it sums up as the idea that "when your own initials are enough." That artisanal identity, rooted in the house's Venetian origins, frames how its perfumes are positioned.

Origin & founders

Bottega Veneta was founded in 1966 in Vicenza by Michele Taddei and Renzo Zengiaro [2]. The business specialised in artisanal leather goods and developed Intrecciato, a method of weaving strips of leather through slits cut in another piece of leather to create a durable, flexible material that became the house's signature. The brand opened its first United States store, in New York City, in 1972. Its headquarters are in Milan.

History & milestones

Gucci acquired Bottega Veneta in February 2001 for 156 million dollars, bringing the house into the group that later became Kering [2]. Over the following decade the brand expanded well beyond leather goods into ready-to-wear, footwear and accessories.

The house entered fragrance in June 2011, launching its first women's eau de parfum during the period when its scents were produced under a Coty licence. That arrangement ran until the early 2020s. In January 2023, Kering established its own beauty division, Kering Beauté, which took over the Bottega Veneta fragrance licence from Coty [8]. The following year marked a shift from licensed production to in-house development: in 2024 the house released its first in-house fragrance collection of five scents under Kering Beauté, conceived under the creative direction of Matthieu Blazy [3]. Trade coverage described it as the first major product launch from Kering Beauté since the division began.

Ownership

Bottega Veneta is owned by Kering, the French luxury group, which acquired the house (via Gucci) in 2001. Within Kering it sits alongside sister brands including Gucci, Balenciaga, Boucheron, Brioni and Valentino's fragrance operations. The fragrance line itself is operated by Kering Beauté rather than as an independent beauty company.

Philosophy & positioning

The house frames its work around the Latin motto "Labor et Ingenium," which the company renders as craft and ingenuity, and a quiet-luxury stance built on discretion rather than visible logos — captured in its line that a wearer needs no more than their own initials. According to the brand, this artisanal heritage carries directly into the fragrances, which were conceived as an expression of Bottega Veneta's Venetian, cross-cultural origins. Editorial coverage noted that the scents were intended to reflect Venice's history as a hub where outside influences "weave" together, an echo of the Intrecciato technique.

Products & innovation

The 2024 in-house collection comprises five eau de parfum scents: Colpo di Sole, Come With Me, Acqua Sale, Déjà Minuit and Alchemie [3]. Their compositions draw on sourced naturals — Italian bergamot and French orris butter in Come With Me, Spanish labdanum and Macedonian juniper oil in Acqua Sale, French Angelica oil and Moroccan orange blossom absolute in Colpo di Sole, Brazilian pink pepper and Somalian myrrh in Alchemie, and geranium from Madagascar with Guatemalan cardamom in Déjà Minuit. The brand states the perfumes are made using essences of 100 percent natural origin rather than synthetic ingredients [4]. The scents are presented in refillable bottles whose hand-blown look recalls Murano glass.

Two points in the record are reported inconsistently. On development, Marie Claire states the fragrances were created with Kering Beauté's own perfumers [4], while FashionNetwork reports they were developed in close collaboration with Creed, the high-end perfume house Kering acquired in 2023, for ingredient sourcing [8]; the WWD coverage of the launch did not mention Creed. On naming, WWD and Marie Claire spell one scent "Colpo di Sole" [3][4], whereas Highsnobiety renders it "Corpo di Sole" [5].

Current status

Bottega Veneta is an active Kering luxury house, and its fragrance line is also active. Following the 2024 in-house launch, the scents reached United States retail in 2025, debuting at a Bergdorf Goodman perfume counter that WWD described as the beauty brand's first retail partnership [6]. The fragrance line is licensed to and run by Kering Beauté rather than operated as a standalone beauty brand.
