Overview
Brioni is an Italian luxury menswear house headquartered in Rome, founded in 1945 by master tailor Nazareno Fonticoli and his business partner Gaetano Savini [1]. Built on Roman bespoke tailoring, the company expanded over the decades into leather goods, shoes, eyewear and, more recently, fragrance. Since 2011 it has been part of the French luxury group Kering, which acquired it when the group was still named PPR [2].
In beauty terms, Brioni is a fragrance entry: the perfumes it sells reach the market through a licensing arrangement rather than in-house production. The wider business remains a tailoring house, and the brand reached its 80th anniversary in 2025 [4].
Origin and founders
The first Brioni store opened on Via Barberini 79, in the heart of Rome, in 1945. According to the company, Fonticoli was a master tailor and Savini his business partner, and the shop offered bespoke garments, handmade shoes and accessories in a range of exclusive materials [1]. Brioni describes the pairing as a marriage of technical skill and creative entrepreneurship that came to define its heritage. The name itself references the Brijuni (Brioni) Islands off the Croatian coast, then the summer residence of Yugoslav president Josip Broz Tito.
History and milestones
Brioni is credited with staging the first menswear fashion show in modern fashion history. In 1952, the house presented its collection in the Sala Bianca at the Palazzo Pitti in Florence, introducing what became known as the "Peacock Revolution" — bolder colours, lighter materials and slimmer silhouettes for men [2]. The same year, the company registered a polo-player logo, more than a decade before Polo Ralph Lauren began using a similar symbol [2]. During the 1950s its suits were worn by Hollywood figures including Clark Gable, John Wayne and Cary Grant.
In 1959, a production facility in Penne, in Abruzzo, introduced what Brioni called the Prêt Couture concept, described as ready-to-wear haute couture. The company later opened a tailoring school, the Scuola di Alta Sartoria, in Penne in 1985. Brioni's association with screen tailoring continued on film: the house dressed Pierce Brosnan as James Bond from GoldenEye (1995) onward, and Daniel Craig in Casino Royale (2006).
Ownership
Brioni has been a subsidiary of Kering since the acquisition completed in 2011, when the group still traded as PPR; PPR was renamed Kering in 2013 [2]. The brand's own promotional context dates the move to 2012, but Wikipedia and multiple trade sources record 2011, and that is the year used here. Within Kering, Brioni sits alongside other houses including Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga, Boucheron and the group's Valentino fragrance operations.
Philosophy and positioning
Brioni positions itself as a Roman sartorial house, and its current tagline, "Eight decades of Roman style," frames the brand around tailoring heritage since 1945 [1]. It operates at the luxury price tier, and its identity centres on bespoke and made-to-measure menswear rather than mass production.
Products and fragrance
Brioni's perfumes are produced under licence. In December 2019, Lalique Group secured an exclusive worldwide agreement to create and sell fragrances for the house, with the first scent originally slated for launch in 2020 and the agreement running through to 2024 [3][9]. The first fragrance under that licence, Brioni Eau de Parfum, reached the market in 2021 [6]. A second scent, Brioni Eau de Parfum Intense, followed later the same year [7], and Brioni Eau de Parfum Éclat appeared in 2022 [8]. These men's fragrances are the basis on which Brioni appears as a beauty brand.
Current status
Brioni is an active luxury menswear house, classified here as acquired because it operates as a Kering subsidiary rather than an independent company. By the firm's own account and trade reporting, it ran 58 stores worldwide as of 2025 and marked its 80th anniversary that year with a "Tailoring Legends" exhibit and a gala in Rome [4]. In December 2025, creative director Norbert Stumpfl, who had led design since 2018, departed, with no successor announced at the time of reporting.
