Summary

Overview

James Bond, marketed as James Bond 007, is a licensed men's and women's fragrance line built around the British spy film franchise. It launched in 2012 to coincide with the series' 50th anniversary and the release of Skyfall, debuting as a UK exclusive at Harrods in London on 15 August [3]. The line is produced under licence from Eon Productions Ltd. and Danjaq LLC, the companies behind the Bond films; the fragrance licence has been held by Coty Inc. since 2016, having started with Procter & Gamble's prestige division in 2012 [5].

The line remains in distribution worldwide, including through the official 007 Store, but no new fragrance has been released since February 2020. Its launch cadence has tracked the Bond film cycle, and with No Time to Die (2021) the most recent film, the range is in a between-films lull rather than discontinued.

Origin

The fragrance grew out of a long-discussed idea inside the Bond camp. Keith Snelgrove of Eon Productions said the producers had wanted to do a fragrance for ten years before the deal closed, adding that the original licensee "really captured the essence of the brand." That licensee was Procter & Gamble, whose prestige unit signed the men's fragrance deal with Eon Productions and Danjaq LLC and slotted Bond into its fashion portfolio alongside Hugo Boss, Lacoste and Puma [2].

The debut scent was timed to the franchise's 50th anniversary, marking five decades since Dr. No opened in 1962, and to the release of Skyfall, the 23rd film in the series [2]. It was an aromatic fougère — a classic masculine style described by P&G as "mossy and ferny" — composed by perfumer Sonia Constant of the fragrance house Givaudan [8]. The signature scent's notes include apple, cardamom, sandalwood, vetiver, lavender, moss and coumarin. Design cues were drawn from the films: the bottle's diamond-patterned glass was inspired by the ST Dupont cufflinks worn in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, and the cap was styled to resemble one of Bond's gadgets.

History and milestones

After the 2012 signature launch, the line expanded quickly. Ocean Royale arrived in March 2013 in a blue bottle, followed by the silver-bottled Quantum in August of the same year. In 2015, 007 Seven and a more concentrated 007 Seven Intense became the first releases issued after the licence moved to Coty [10]. A 007 Cologne followed in 2018, and in February 2020 the line added James Bond 007 Pour Homme and Pour Femme — the first women's fragrance in the range [9]. Across these years the line released at least eight distinct scents.

Ownership

Two ownership questions sit behind the brand: who owns the Bond name, and who makes the fragrance. The James Bond intellectual property rests with Eon Productions and Danjaq LLC, the US holding company that co-owns the film and merchandising rights with the studio. The fragrance itself is a licensed product, and that licence has changed hands. Sources differ on which company to name as the parent: Wikipedia and trade coverage identify Coty Inc. as the fragrance licensee since 2016, while WWD records Procter & Gamble's prestige division as the original 2012 licensee [5][2]. The two accounts are sequential rather than contradictory — the licence transferred from Procter & Gamble to Coty in 2016 as part of Coty's "Galleria" acquisition of 41 beauty brands from P&G [5]. Through that deal the line became a stablemate of Coty fragrance brands such as Calvin Klein, BOSS, Davidoff, Burberry and Escada.

Philosophy and positioning

The line was conceived as a way to translate the Bond character — masculine, sophisticated and gadget-loving — into a wearable scent, with packaging tied directly to film props. P&G positioned it as a prestige product with broad reach; the company's Bill Brace said the Bond brand gave men "access to the high-end world of 007" and described its appeal as "timeless, aspirational, iconic" [2]. The target buyer was framed, in the company's words, as "guys in their 20s and 30s who love Bond, who love adventure, gadgets, travel and being a man's man with style and sophistication," with strong secondary sales as a gift bought by women [3].

Products and distribution

The range is fragrance-only, spanning eau de toilette, eau de parfum and cologne formats, with the signature scent extended into aftershave, shower gel and deodorant. It launched UK-exclusive at Harrods before a wider rollout in September 2012 across North America, Europe and Asian markets, and reached US shoppers through mid-tier department stores including Kohl's and Sears [3]. The line is sold through multiple channels, including the official 007 Store and Glowjakt-tracked Swedish retailers.

Recognition

Coverage has come chiefly from beauty and film press. WWD reported on both the licensing deal and the launch in 2012, and the official site cites GQ's description of the original scent as "the most dangerously sophisticated fragrance in the world" [1].

Current status

The brand is active. Its existing catalogue remains in retail distribution worldwide, and the official 007 Store continues to sell it. No new fragrance has launched since the Pour Homme and Pour Femme editions of February 2020 [9]; because the line's release rhythm follows the Bond film cycle and No Time to Die (2021) is the most recent film, the range is in a quiet stretch between films rather than withdrawn.
