Summary

Overview

Escada is a German fashion house and fragrance brand founded in Munich by the former model Margaretha Ley and her husband Wolfgang Ley. Its fashion business reads its founding as 1978, though some sources date it to 1976. The label built its early reputation on bold colour and what it called "Sporty Elegance," and from 1990 it extended that identity into perfume. The fragrance line, now licensed to and operated by Coty [4], remains active and continues to release new scents, while the fashion company behind the name has passed through several owners and repeated insolvencies.

Origin and founders

Margaretha Ley trained as a tailor at the Royal Court in Stockholm and modelled for designers including Jacques Fath and Christian Dior before turning to design herself. She and Wolfgang Ley launched the house in Munich, where Wolfgang ran a knitwear business, and Margaretha became known for what one account calls "bold, feminine designs" with elaborate inlays and appliqués.

The founding date is recorded inconsistently across sources. The brand's own about page and Wikipedia both give 1978 [1][2], while Coty's brand page and the fragrance publication Now Smell This state 1976 [3]; the earlier year may refer to Wolfgang Ley's prior knitwear venture rather than the Escada label itself. Coty's account adds an origin story, saying Margaretha named the company after a racehorse called ESCADA that she bet on [4].

History and milestones

Escada went public in 1986, with the founders retaining a majority of the voting stock. Margaretha Ley died in 1992, two years after the house released its first signature fragrance, Escada Margaretha Ley, in 1990. The scent's heart-shaped bottle design has carried through into later perfumes.

From 1993 the company began issuing a limited-edition summer fragrance each year, a practice it has described as pioneering among perfume houses and has continued for decades. The fragrance business itself was always run under licence. A partnership with Procter & Gamble was established by 1995; in 2002, after twelve years in beauty, Escada transferred its fragrance and cosmetics rights to Wella under a long-term worldwide agreement [2]. The licence moved again in 2015, when P&G sold its fragrance division, including Escada, to Coty [3].

Ownership

Two distinct entities sit behind the Escada name today. The fashion house is owned by Regent, L.P., a Beverly Hills private-equity firm [2], while the fragrance business is licensed to Coty, which lists Escada among its prestige brands [4].

The corporate history of the fashion side has been turbulent. Escada AG filed for insolvency in 2009 and was acquired by the steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, with his daughter-in-law Megha Mittal becoming chair. Mittal sold the company to Regent, L.P. in 2019, and in September 2020 Escada filed for insolvency a second time [2].

Philosophy and positioning

Escada presents itself as an expression of extroverted, joyful femininity. Coty's brand page frames the founder's signature as "extroverted femininity with a colorful and joyful touch" and carries the tagline "FEARLESS. FORWARD. YOU." [4]. In fragrance, the brand describes its values as feminine, sensual and casual with a touch of glamour, an identity the perfume publication Wikiparfum traces back to the house's original "Sporty Elegance" concept. The label is positioned in the prestige tier.

Products and innovation

The perfume range is built around floral and fruity compositions, with longstanding pillars such as Especially Escada and Magnetism alongside the annual summer editions. Among those seasonal scents, Cherry in the Air, released in 2013, is among the more frequently cited [3]. The company's catalogue of limited summer fragrances runs to dozens of entries, and recent additions include Yum Me, Sunny! in 2025 and Pacific Paradise in 2026 [6].

Controversies

A 1994 lawsuit alleged discriminatory conduct at the company. Separately, animal-rights campaigns between 2007 and 2010 pressured Escada to remove fur from its collections, which it achieved by 2011 [2].

Current status

The Escada brand is active. Its fragrance line continues to produce new releases under Coty, including Pacific Paradise in 2026 and Yum Me, Sunny! and Bali Paradise in 2025, distributed globally [6]. The fashion house behind the name has had repeated financial difficulties, but the perfume business remains in continuous production.
