Overview
Garnier is a French mass-market beauty brand specialising in hair care, hair colour and skin care. It was founded in 1904 by Alfred Amour Garnier, a French chemist, and originally traded as Laboratoires Garnier [8]. Since 1970 it has been a subsidiary of L'Oréal, and today it operates as one of the group's largest consumer brands, sold worldwide through supermarkets, drugstores and pharmacies. The company is headquartered in Clichy, on the northern edge of Paris.
The brand remains highly active. In March 2026 it named model Gisele Bündchen as its first global brand ambassador, described by trade press as the largest endorsement move in its history, tied to a worldwide hair-care campaign [9]. Garnier positions itself around accessible, plant-based beauty and has built much of its recent identity on sustainability and cruelty-free certification.
Origin and founders
The company traces its beginnings to 1904, when Alfred Amour Garnier opened a small hair-care laboratory in France. According to the brand's heritage account, its first product was patented as the first hair lotion made from natural plant ingredients [3] — a plant-derived positioning the company still returns to more than a century later. The early business operated under the name Laboratoires Garnier before the Garnier name was carried forward on its own.
History and milestones
Through the twentieth century the brand widened its range well beyond that first lotion. It introduced sun-care products in 1936 and launched a permanent home hair colour in 1960, moving the company toward the at-home colour category that would later define much of its business.
A turning point came in 1970, when L'Oréal acquired Garnier [8]. Under L'Oréal's ownership the brand expanded from hair care and colour into skin care, and rolled out a series of lines that became its commercial anchors. Nutrisse colour crème reached the United States market in 1999, and the Fructis hair-care line, built around fruit-based formulas, was introduced in 2003 according to the company's own heritage timeline [3]. (One lower-tier industry blog dates Fructis to the 1960s, but this appears to conflate it with Garnier's earlier hair-colour launches; the brand's heritage page is the more authoritative record [13].)
Later milestones leaned on reformulation and ingredient stories. Olia, an ammonia-free hair colour built on an oil blend, was released in 2013; a micellar water line and the Whole Blends range followed around 2016; and an expanded skin-care line arrived later in the decade. In 2021 the brand introduced a product line for Black skin in Brazil, co-created with the Brazilian singer Iza [8].
Ownership
Garnier is wholly owned by L'Oréal, the French personal-care group, which acquired it in 1970. Within L'Oréal's wider portfolio it sits alongside other consumer and prestige brands including L'Oréal Paris, Maybelline, Vichy, Lancôme, Kiehl's, Biotherm and Mixa, among others. The brand operates a number of country-specific sites and campaigns rather than a single global storefront.
Philosophy and positioning
The company frames itself around what it calls accessible, sustainable beauty rooted in natural plant ingredients. Its stated mission is to "pave the way towards more sustainable beauty that's accessible to all," and it describes wanting "to create a positive impact" through greener products available at a mass-market price. Garnier sits firmly in the drugstore tier, distributed through supermarkets, pharmacies and general retailers rather than specialist beauty counters.
Much of its ingredient messaging is organised around hero ingredients such as argan oil, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, aloe vera and charcoal. The company groups its formulation approach under the labels "Green Sciences" and "High-Tech Nature," which it describes as combining biotechnology with natural-origin ingredients to balance efficacy against environmental impact.
Products and innovation
Garnier's best-known product in recent years is its SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water, a no-rinse facial cleanser. The brand cites Nielsen sales data ranking it the number-one micellar brand, and the All-in-1 version won the cleanser category of the Allure Readers' Choice Awards in 2020 [10]. Other long-running ranges include the Fructis hair-care line, Nutrisse and Olia hair colours, and a vitamin C skin-care range.
The company links several of its formulas to its sustainability work. It says its vitamin C is biotechnology-derived from renewable corn rather than extracted from oranges, which it claims cuts the ingredient's environmental footprint substantially [9].
Sustainability
Sustainability is central to how Garnier presents itself, and the brand publishes an annual progress report on its commitments. It states that 99% of its ingredients are vegan, using no animal-derived materials [4], and that all of its industrial sites reached 100% renewable energy by the end of 2024. The company also reports rising use of recycled plastic in its packaging.
In cruelty-free certification, Garnier says all of its products globally are approved by Cruelty Free International under the Leaping Bunny programme, which it calls the cruelty-free "gold standard." The approval was announced in March 2021 after the brand worked with the organisation to evidence its global portfolio, a process its certifier said involved more than 2,800 ingredients from over 500 suppliers [8].
Recognition
Beyond the 2020 Allure award for its micellar water [10], the brand drew significant trade-press attention in 2026 with the Gisele Bündchen ambassadorship, covered by outlets including WWD and BeautyMatter as a notable step in its 120-year history.
Controversies
In 2025 Garnier reduced its Pride Week sponsorship commitment in New York City, a move reported in the context of a broader corporate pullback from Pride sponsorships [8].
Current status
Garnier is an active, global brand. Its most recent major activity was the March 2026 announcement of Gisele Bündchen as its first global ambassador and the accompanying worldwide hair-care campaign [9]. The brand continues to run country-specific sites, publish sustainability reporting and launch new products across its hair and skin lines.
