Summary

Overview

ESI is an Italian maker of food supplements, nutraceuticals and herbal remedies, based in Albissola Marina on the western Ligurian Riviera, near Savona. The company dates its activity in supplements to 1975 [2], and over five decades it has grown from importing patented Swiss formulas into a manufacturer that develops and produces its own products in-house. Most of its catalogue is ingestible wellness products, but the brand also sells a smaller set of topical lines that sit in beauty and personal care: an aloe vera gel range, a tea tree oil line, the Rigenforte hair-care range and a Marseille-style soap.

ESI is no longer independent. In 2019 it was acquired by Sodalis Group, an Italian health, beauty and personal-care group [2]. It continues to trade under its own name, and its products are sold mainly through pharmacies, parapharmacies and herbalist shops, alongside the company's own online store.

Origin

According to the company's own history, ESI began in 1975 as the name of a line of patented formulations imported directly from Switzerland. The decision to stop importing and instead develop and manufacture its own formulas came later; ESI frames this as a move towards products "in line with the latest scientific research and market demands". The company's account does not give a date for that shift.

Accounts of where the business started differ. ESI's own site says the company was founded in Albissola Marina, a small town on the western Ligurian Riviera, which it places at the foot of the hills and 800 metres from the sea [2]. An undated profile published by one of its distributors gives a different version: it says the company first operated in Genoa and later moved to Albissola Marina to gain larger production space [11].

Both sources agree on the 1975 start. The company's registered office is listed in neighbouring Albisola Superiore, in the province of Savona, while production remains in Albissola Marina.

History & milestones

ESI's published timeline for its early decades focuses on regulatory approvals and quality certifications. According to the company, it received authorisation from the Italian Ministry of Health in 1995 to produce dietetic products and supplements [3]. Four years later, in 1999, it obtained ISO 9001 certification, the international standard for quality-management systems. The quality system was updated to the ISO 9001:2015 version in 2017.

Product-level milestones followed. In 2004, the Aloe Vera ESI line of drinking juices received a product certification from the certification body Certiquality. In 2015 the company patented a slow-release capsule technology it calls Naturcaps Retard Bifasica, registered as Italian patent no. 1413768 [4]. The same distributor profile cited above adds that ESI obtained authorisation in 2009 from CCPB to market organic products; the company's own timeline does not mention this.

The 2019 sale to Sodalis Group came next. Since then, ESI's published timeline has been dominated by further certifications: an IFOS five-star rating for its Omega 3 Extra Pure supplement in 2020, FSSC 22000 food-safety certification in 2023, a certified organisational carbon footprint under the UNI EN ISO 14064 standard in 2024, ISO 45001 occupational health and safety certification in 2025, and a Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) attestation in 2026 [3].

In 2025 the company marked fifty years of activity, a milestone it references across its own communications.

Ownership

ESI is owned by Sodalis Group. The company's own account describes the 2019 transaction as an acquisition by Gruppo Sodalis, which it calls an Italian leader in the health, beauty and personal-care market.

An announcement by the advisory firm Vitale & Co., dated 18 March 2019 and published on the IMAP website, describes the deal in slightly different terms. It states that Vitale & Co. advised ESI's shareholders on the sale of a stake in the company's share capital to Sodalis Group [9]. The announcement describes ESI as "an Italian leading company in the food supplement and nutraceutical sector", but does not state the size of the stake, the price or other terms. The adviser's role, according to the same announcement, covered financial analysis, the search for potential bidders, due diligence and the negotiation of the agreement.

Within Sodalis Group, ESI sits alongside other Italian brands including BioNike, Deborah Milano, Brisk, Brelil Professional, GOOVI and Triple Dry.

Philosophy & positioning

ESI presents itself as a company that combines natural ingredients with scientific research. Its stated mission is to turn nature into everyday wellbeing solutions "through the best scientific research", and its long-running tagline, "Dalla ricerca ESI sentirsi bene è naturale", translates roughly as "with ESI research, feeling good comes naturally". A more informal slogan used on its site, "Funziona? Eh sì, è ESI!" ("Does it work? Oh yes, it's ESI!"), carries the same message in a lighter register.

The company organises its identity around five pillars: research, ingredient selection, in-house production, quality and international presence. It describes its products as 100 per cent Italian and says they are recognised internationally for their effectiveness and natural character. ESI also says it works with universities, research institutes and hospital bodies in Italy and abroad to test the efficacy and safety of its products, although it does not name any of these partner institutions.

ESI has kept a single type of sales channel. According to the company, its products have always been sold exclusively through physical and online pharmacies, parapharmacies and herbalist shops, both in Italy and, increasingly, abroad. The company says its products are present in more than 50 countries. It also sells directly to consumers through its own online shop.

One further claim covers the whole range: ESI states that all of its products are declared gluten-free under EU regulations, meaning a gluten content below 20 parts per million, which makes them suitable for people with coeliac disease.

Products & innovation

The bulk of ESI's catalogue consists of food supplements grouped by need, from digestion and cholesterol to sleep, immunity and weight control, alongside vitamin and mineral complexes. The topical and personal-care lines are a smaller part of the business, but they are the ones most relevant to beauty.

The Aloe Vera ESI Gel line is built around pure aloe vera gel, which the company describes as a gentle way to hydrate and nourish the skin. The range includes a plain gel, versions enriched with vitamin E and tea tree oil or with argan oil, and an aloe lip balm. Aloe recurs across the brand: the same plant also anchors the Aloe Vera ESI drinking juices and the Aloe Fresh oral-care range.

The Tea Tree Remedy line centres on tea tree oil, the essential oil of Melaleuca alternifolia, which ESI describes as purifying and rebalancing. The company says its tea tree oil is 100 per cent pure and contains more than 38 per cent of its characteristic compounds, measured as total terpenes [8].

Rigenforte is ESI's hair-care line, aimed at strengthening hair and reducing hair loss. It combines a shampoo, a lotion called Lozione Urto, a conditioner and an oral supplement in capsule form. According to the company, the formulas are based on Biotinax, a complex of biotin and the amino acids methionine and cystine that ESI says it has patented [7]. The topical products also contain plant stem cells and Capixyl, a blend of a peptide (acetyl tetrapeptide-3) with red clover extract. The range also includes a Marseille soap for body cleansing and a sweet almond oil.

Several of ESI's in-house technologies relate to its supplements rather than its cosmetics. Naturcaps Retard Bifasica, the patented capsule format, is designed to release nutrients gradually in two phases. A separate patented process the company calls Tecnologia Trifase is used in its omega-3 products; ESI says it eliminates the fishy aftertaste and odour. The Omega 3 Extra Pure product holds a five-star IFOS rating, and several omega-3 products carry Friend of the Sea certification.

All products are made at the company's plant in Albissola Marina, which ESI says subjects every batch to analytical checks before release. Figures for the plant's size differ. The company describes its new production site as covering more than 20,000 square metres [2]. The undated distributor profile gives a figure of about 19,000 square metres, of which 10,000 are covered, and puts the workforce at more than 100 employees [11]. The distributor's figure is undated and may predate the newer plant.

Sustainability

ESI says it is carrying out an environmental, social and governance (ESG) plan with specific actions in each area. On the environmental side, the company reports that its production plant runs on 100 per cent renewable electricity, that 99 per cent of its packaging is recyclable, and that it uses recycled and recyclable materials in its packaging.

In 2024 the company had its organisational carbon footprint certified under the UNI EN ISO 14064 standard. Based on its 2025 footprint analysis, ESI says it offset part of its carbon dioxide emissions in 2026 by buying and retiring 2,100 carbon credits [4]. These figures come from the company's own sustainability reporting.

08 /

Current status

ESI has been owned by Sodalis Group since 2019 and remains an active brand under that ownership. Its most recent milestones date from 2026, when it obtained a GMP attestation and completed its carbon-credit project. The same year it exhibited at Vitafoods Europe 2026, a trade fair for the nutraceutical and supplement industry [10].

The company continues to manufacture in Albissola Marina, sells through pharmacies, parapharmacies and herbalists, and operates its own online store. It maintains active accounts on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Facebook.
