Overview
Halloween is a Spanish fragrance brand built around a single feminine perfume first released in 1997 by the Madrid fashion house of designer Jesús del Pozo [5]. The scent, named after a holiday then little known in Spain, outlasted its creator: after del Pozo's death in 2011, the brand passed to the perfume group Grupo Perfumes y Diseño, which in 2015 turned Halloween into a standalone brand in its own right [7]. It remains in active production and is sold, according to the producer's trade press, in more than 90 countries [7].
The brand is owned and operated by Perfumes y Diseño Comercial, S.L., the parent company of the PyD group, based in Madrid.
Origin and founders
Halloween began as a perfume rather than a company. Jesús del Pozo (1946–2011) was a Madrid-born fashion designer who founded his clothing house in 1974 and moved into fragrance in 1992 with "Duende", his first feminine scent [5]. Several further perfumes followed under his name through the following decades.
The Halloween fragrance itself appeared in 1997, created by perfumer Max Gavarry, who also designed its crescent-moon bottle [6]. Fragrantica classifies it as an Oriental Floral built on violet and sea notes over a base of incense, sandalwood, Madagascar vanilla and myrrh. According to one account of its origin, the perfume was conceived in 1990s Spain as a mysterious autumn scent at a time when the Halloween holiday was not widely observed there.
Most published years agree on a 1997 launch: the brand's own site, Wikipedia and Fragrantica all give that date [4][5]. A 2015 Spanish trade article describes the perfume as having launched "17 years ago", which would imply 1998; that figure is an inference from the wording rather than a stated date, and the 1997 year is the better-supported one [7].
History and milestones
After "Duende" in 1992, the Halloween perfume launched in 1997 and became, by the producer's own account, the best-selling fragrance carried under the Jesús del Pozo name [7]. A variation, Halloween Kiss, followed in 2008.
The pivotal change came after the founder's death. Jesús del Pozo died in August 2011, and Grupo Perfumes y Diseño acquired the brand from his heirs. The company first rebranded the fashion label as DELPOZO, hiring Josep Font as creative director [5]. The perfume line took a separate path: in 2015, Perfumes y Diseño reorganised its fragrance catalogue under a new standalone Halloween identity, introducing a fresh logo and the line "Your Perfumes. Your Dreams." [7].
Ownership
Halloween is a wholly owned brand of Perfumes y Diseño Comercial, S.L., registered in Madrid, which describes itself as the parent of the PyD group [3]. The group acquired the brand from the del Pozo heirs in 2011. PyD holds perfumery rights to a portfolio of labels including Scalpers, El Ganso and Tous Perfumes, and distributes several international names. The group reported revenue of €112.38 million for 2023, up 22 percent on the previous year [8].
Philosophy and positioning
Halloween presents itself as an "intergenerational icon" centred on feminine mystery, seduction and what the company frames as inner "magic". Its English-language messaging runs under the tagline "Believe in your magic", with the Spanish line "Revela tu magia" ("Reveal your magic"). The brand describes the original Eau de Toilette as capturing "the enigmatic and seductive charm of women".
Products
The original Halloween Eau de Toilette remains the brand's anchor product and is still in production. Around it, the company has built feminine ranges including Halloween My Wish, Halloween Bliss, Halloween Blue Drop, Halloween Blossom and the newer My Wish Addiction, organised into collections such as Woman Classic and Bloom. A masculine line runs in parallel under names including Halloween Man and My World. The feminine fragrances trade on the violet, floral and sweet-resinous character established by the 1997 original.
Recognition
The original perfume was named Best Women's Fragrance of the Year by Glamour magazine in 2004 [5].
Current status
Halloween is active. It is sold through a live e-commerce site, continues to issue new launches such as My Wish Addiction, and reaches a global market reported at more than 90 countries. Its producer, Perfumes y Diseño, remains a growing Spanish fragrance group [8].
