Overview
Kierin NYC is an American niche perfumery brand founded in 2018 and based in New York City [10]. It was created by Mona Maine de Biran, a former international model, who built the company around the idea of fragrance as storytelling drawn from everyday New York life rather than the celebrity-driven imagery common in mainstream perfume. The brand sells eau de parfum directly to consumers, positions its scents as genderless, and markets itself on vegan, cruelty-free and eco-conscious credentials.
The house launched in November 2018 on Amazon Luxury Beauty with an inaugural set of four fragrances, before later moving to a direct-to-consumer model that, according to the company, deliberately excludes Amazon and department stores [1]. It remains active, with a current online store, best-selling lines and recent launches.
Origin & founders
Mona Maine de Biran founded Kierin NYC after a career as an international model, during which, by her own account, she appeared on magazine covers and television across Europe, Asia and the Americas. She has described the brand as a reaction to what she saw as the limits of the existing market, saying she and her partners had "been unsatisfied with the rules and compromises that existed in the market." Rather than the "aspirational" luxury model, she has said she prefers an "inspirational" one.
She is consistently identified as co-founder and president, and in later coverage as CEO. Editorial interviews name her husband, Didier, as co-founder; The Perfume Society and Fragroom both describe him as a beauty-industry veteran of more than twenty years whose career spanned Chanel, Bvlgari, Prada and Carolina Herrera, with managing-director roles at Bvlgari Parfums and Puig North America [5][10]. The brand's own blog gives a slightly different account, naming a co-founder called "Chris" alongside Mona and her husband; this name does not appear in any independent source and the husband, Didier, is the figure named consistently across editorial coverage [4][5].
The inaugural fragrances were composed by Mathieu Nardin, a perfumer originally from Grasse who, according to The Perfume Society, had worked with houses including Etro, Houbigant and Miller Harris. The company has said it intended to vary its perfumers from one project to the next to keep a diversity of creative voices.
History & milestones
Kierin NYC introduced its first collection — 10 a.m. Flirt, Sunday Brunch, Santal Sky and Nitro Noir — following the 2018 launch, and the line was widely covered in niche-fragrance press through 2019. In 2020 the brand added Rose Ink, part of a "Tattoo Art" theme, which Mona Maine de Biran connected to the personal meaning of tattoos.
The brand's product families are organised around art-inspired themes such as Graffiti Art, Pop Art and Tattoo Art, with scent groupings the company labels Woody & Earth, Amber & Spice, Fresh & Citrus and Aromatic & Gourmand.
Philosophy & positioning
Kierin NYC frames perfume as "fragrance as art, worn not to impress, but to express and manifest," a phrase it uses to describe its mission. The company centers its identity on New York itself, describing the brand as being "about people, not places" and saying it celebrates "the beauty of New York's 99% — not just its 1%."
A recurring theme is the rejection of gendered marketing. Mona Maine de Biran has said she dreams of a day with no separate women's or men's aisles for fragrance, and has argued that "genderless doesn't have to be generic." The brand also positions niche perfumery as something for everyday wear rather than special occasions, and presents itself as accessible rather than elitist; on its homepage it states that "fine niche perfumery can be accessible, worn every day, and locally made."
Products & innovation
The brand's range is built on eau de parfum, with several lines highlighted as best-sellers, including Sunday Brunch, Nitro Noir and Rose Ink. Sunday Brunch combines Italian bergamot, lemon, Earl Grey tea and jasmine, and was described by one reviewer as "the perfect Earl Grey tea scent." Nitro Noir, built on Italian bergamot, pink berries, orris and patchouli, has been presented as the collection's statement fragrance, evoking New York nightlife. Other scents include the fig-led 10 a.m. Flirt, the sandalwood-based Santal Sky, and Rose Ink, which pairs saffron and cassis with a rose heart at what the brand describes as a 20% perfume-oil concentration.
According to the company, its formulas combine essential oils, "safe synthetics" and natural extracts, and comply with IFRA standards and California's Proposition 65. The brand says it avoids phthalates, parabens and what it calls harsh chemicals.
Ethics & sustainability
Kierin NYC is certified by PETA as vegan and cruelty-free, a claim it features prominently on its homepage. The company states that its fragrances are made in the United States and that its packaging is designed to limit environmental impact: bottles are described as recyclable glass finished in an opaque coating intended to protect the scent from light without UV-filter chemicals, and the brand says it avoids unnecessary plastics such as cellophane. It frames this combination of clean formulation and recyclable packaging as part of an "eco-luxury" positioning.
Recognition
Kierin NYC won Best Popular Fragrance at the Get The Gloss Beauty and Wellness Awards in 2019 [11]. The following year, its Nitro Noir eau de parfum was named a finalist for Best Men's Fragrance at the Beauty Shortlist & Wellbeing Awards 2020 [12]. The brand has otherwise been covered chiefly in niche-perfume publications, including The Perfume Society, CaFleureBon, Fragroom and The Candy Perfume Boy, several of which centered their coverage on founder interviews rather than independent product testing.
Current status
The brand is active. Its direct-to-consumer website continues to operate, listing current best-sellers and newer releases such as Café Kiss, and its fragrances are distributed beyond the United States, including in the Nordic market.
