Summary

Overview

L'Entropiste is an independent French perfume house founded in Paris in January 2025 by the perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour [10]. The house is built around a single idea borrowed from physics: entropy, the tendency of any system toward disorder. Duchaufour, who has worked in the industry for more than forty years and is often called the "Master of Incense," treats that disorder as a starting point rather than a flaw, and the brand presents itself under the tagline "Master of Disorder" [9].

The company launched with an initial range of six fragrances and four candles, sold through its own e-commerce site and a flagship boutique that opened in the Marais district of Paris in February 2025 [10]. At the time of writing the house remains a recent, France-centred operation, with trade press reporting plans to expand into other markets over time.

Origin and founder

L'Entropiste is the personal project of Bertrand Duchaufour, a French perfumer who began his career in 1985 in Grasse and went on to compose fragrances for houses including L'Artisan Parfumeur, Comme des Garçons, Acqua di Parma, Penhaligon's and Amouage [7]. He is particularly associated with incense compositions, and the critic Luca Turin described him as "one of the chief exponents" of the modern niche style known as nouvelle parfumerie [7]. Duchaufour also works as a painter.

The "Master of Disorder" title was, by the founder's own account, devised by his marketing team to signal the brand's non-conformist stance [9]. The concept extends to the packaging: the bottles, designed by the agency Centdegrés and produced by the glassmaker Verescence, are deliberately tilted off their axis.

Philosophy and positioning

The house frames entropy and disorder as the source of creation rather than something to be corrected. "Entropy, a universal law that drives imbalance and leads to chaos, has become the core principle of my creations," Duchaufour states, and the company describes each fragrance as moving through stages, from balance into chaos and toward a new harmony, in a way meant to mirror natural processes. L'Entropiste positions itself, in its own words, as "more than a fragrance house" and as a "living manifesto" exploring how beauty emerges from transformation rather than perfection.

The fragrances are presented as genderless and unisex, intended to evolve with the wearer's own skin chemistry. Across both its scents and its candles the brand emphasises non-conformity and the embrace of imbalance.

Products and innovation

The opening collection spans fragrances such as Ensang Noir, described by the company as an exploration of contrasts built on black rose and incense; Dorian's Spleen, a smoky gourmand drawing on whisky, coffee and ash; Semence Douce; Altamura; Blanc Sada; and White Blood. The candle line, which the brand describes as "genderless and unfiltered," includes Éclat de Lune and Red Dance.

According to the company, the perfumes are highly concentrated eaux de parfum, with concentrations of roughly 20 to 25 percent intended to give long-lasting wear [3]; the founder has said concentration levels can reach 25 percent. The house says Duchaufour selects rare natural materials, and trade-press coverage lists ingredients used in large quantities, among them frankincense, tuberose absolute, maté and wheat bran, alongside synthetic materials [9]. The fragrances are priced at the luxury end of the niche market.

Sustainability

L'Entropiste states that it works to minimise its environmental impact through refillable bottles, recycled paper and what it calls patented eco-friendly packaging [3]. Its secondary packaging is described as made from recycled bamboo pulp. The company does not publicly claim vegan or cruelty-free certification, and no third-party certifications are listed.

Current status

L'Entropiste is active. Founded in January 2025, it operates a single flagship boutique in Paris together with a direct-to-consumer e-commerce site, and a fragrance named White Blood was flagged as new on the site in mid-2026. Distribution remains effectively centred on France, although trade press has reported intentions to extend sales first to the rest of Europe and the Middle East and later to the United States and Asia [8].
