Summary

Overview

Medik8 is a British clinical skincare brand founded in 2009 by scientist Elliot Isaacs [10]. It is known for vitamin A products built around retinaldehyde, and for the CSA Philosophy — a simplified routine of vitamin C and sunscreen by day and vitamin A by night. In June 2025, L'Oréal Groupe agreed to acquire a majority stake in the company, which is set to join the group's Luxe Division [9].

The brand positions itself in what one industry analysis called the "attainable derm" space: clinical, ingredient-led skincare priced below luxury tiers [11]. It manufactures in-house in the United Kingdom and operates across Europe, Australia and a growing US market.

Origin and founders

Medik8 was established in 2009 by Elliot Isaacs, described in trade reporting as a cosmetic scientist. The brand has Harley Street roots and presents itself as a British dermatological skincare company.

The brand's founder attribution is recorded inconsistently across sources. Most accounts — including L'Oréal's own acquisition release, the trade title Cosmetics Business, the private-equity owner Inflexion and an industry analysis by Beauty Independent — name Elliot Isaacs as the 2009 founder [10][9]. One summary of the company's CSA Philosophy page instead attributed the founding to Daniel Isaacs "and his brother." Daniel Isaacs is documented elsewhere as the company's Chief Product Officer and the founder's son rather than its founder, and Glowpedia follows the cross-validated attribution to Elliot Isaacs.

History and milestones

For its first decade Medik8 grew through professional and clinical channels before taking outside investment. According to Beauty Independent, the company "played the long game," operating independently for more than ten years and building what the analysis described as durable growth based on product results rather than celebrity or social-media virality [11].

In February 2021, the private-equity firm Inflexion invested in the brand's parent, Pangaea Laboratories [12]. The following year, on 1 October 2022, Elliot Isaacs stepped back from day-to-day operations after thirteen years, moving to a non-executive director role [10]. The company achieved B Corp certification in 2024.

On 9 June 2025, L'Oréal Groupe announced an agreement to acquire a majority stake [9]. Beauty Independent reported the deal at roughly one billion euros, or about 1.1 billion US dollars, valuing Medik8 at around thirteen times its 2024 sales [11]. Inflexion was set to retain a minority shareholding, while Isaacs remained on the board and chief executive Simon Coble stayed in place.

Ownership

Following the 2025 agreement, L'Oréal Groupe holds the majority stake and the brand is set to join L'Oréal Luxe, the group's prestige division [9]. The firm's historical operating entity is Pangaea Laboratories, and Inflexion — the 2021 investor — retains a minority position. Within L'Oréal, Medik8 sits alongside skincare and prestige labels such as Kiehl's, Lancôme, Helena Rubinstein and Carita.

Cyril Chapuy, president of L'Oréal Luxe, said Medik8 "perfectly complements" the group's existing skincare portfolio.

Philosophy and positioning

Medik8 is built around what it trademarks as the CSA Philosophy: vitamin C plus sunscreen in the morning, vitamin A at night. The company says this approach is clinically proven to address 90% of skin-ageing concerns in three steps, and frames it as a deliberately simplified, evidence-led alternative to more complex routines. Its tagline is "Results Without Compromise."

The brand describes its target customer as digitally native and ingredients-savvy, seeking clinical performance without paying luxury prices. Beauty Independent characterised its approach as "proof-first positioning," noting that it had not relied on founder hype or aesthetic storytelling and that its Instagram following was modest relative to viral competitors [11].

Products and innovation

Medik8 is most associated with vitamin A. Its Crystal Retinal range is based on retinaldehyde, which the company says works eleven times faster than traditional retinol; the line is sold in graduated strengths for different levels of tolerance. A second vitamin A product, r-Retinoate Day & Night, is described by the brand as eight times more powerful than retinol and "8 years in the making." Other named products include Liquid Peptides Advanced MP and EXO-PDRN PRISMATIC+.

The company develops and manufactures its formulas in-house at an ISO-certified innovation centre in the United Kingdom, where it says it blends and manufactures virtually every product. Beauty Independent reported the site as a 100,000-square-foot facility near London where the brand also holds a patent for stabilised retinaldehyde [11]. Among its proprietary technologies are Retinyl Retinoate — a hybrid vitamin A derivative the company says is formed through a condensation reaction between retinol and retinoic acid — and Retinol 3TR. The brand cites clinical studies, conducted by researchers H. Kim and B. Kim and published between 2008 and 2013, reporting wrinkle reduction it states was 22% greater than retinol.

On sustainability, the company holds B Corp certification and states a target of Net Zero by 2040 with a 90% carbon-reduction goal, alongside recycled packaging and a programme donating 1% of every purchase to a non-profit.

Recognition

At the 2025 CEW Beauty Awards, Medik8 was named Best British Brand and won in a Best New Product category. Its Crystal Retinal serum has been featured by publications including Vogue, Marie Claire UK and Glamour, and Beauty Independent described it as "the United Kingdom's No. 1 dermatological face serum" [11]. Trade reporting has noted that the brand gained celebrity recognition, citing model Hailey Bieber among its users.

Current status

Medik8 remains commercially active across Europe, Australia and the United States. Its ownership changed in 2025 when L'Oréal Groupe agreed to acquire a majority stake, with completion expected within months of the June 2025 announcement pending regulatory approval [9]. The founder and chief executive were set to remain involved following the transaction.
