Summary

Overview

RUBINI is an Italian niche fragrance house created by Andrea Bissoli Rubini. It presented its first perfume, Fundamental, at the Esxence perfume fair in Milan in 2015 [11]. The company describes itself as "an independent Italian project" making "perfumes that explore the unexpected" [1]. Every RUBINI fragrance is composed with the perfumer Cristiano Canali, and the cases are designed by the independent artist Francesca Gotti.

The label draws its story from an older family business: a perfumery that Pietro Rubini opened in Verona in the 1930s, the shop in which Andrea Rubini grew up. Fundamental was named one of the niche-perfume blog ÇaFleureBon's two Best Fragrances of 2015, and in 2026 the house's Idilios reached the finals of the Accademia del Profumo awards. RUBINI is active and released its newest fragrance, L'Eau Très Mer, in 2026.

Origin & founders

The brand's narrative begins in Verona in the 1930s, when, according to the company, Pietro Rubini opened his first perfumery [5]. RUBINI's own telling gives no exact year. Sainte Cellier, a London perfumery that stocks the brand, dates the opening to 1937, after Pietro Rubini's return from the Italo-Ethiopian war [13]. The company's text portrays the young shopkeeper serving high-society ladies, theatre clients and the city's pleasure houses, and spending long, bright days in the vineyards and hills around Verona and Lake Garda.

The family shop and the perfume label are separate ventures. The shop goes back to the 1930s; the RUBINI fragrance brand was launched in 2015.

Andrea Bissoli Rubini signs his writing with his full name and is usually called Andrea Rubini on the brand's website. He was born into the family perfumery and grew up in it. Both ÇaFleureBon and the fragrance database Fragrantica identify him as the founder [15]. He ties the project directly to that upbringing: "When you grow up breathing the haute parfumerie, listening to the story of two perfume lovers generations, you can only wish to become part of it, by writing a new adventure." A brand description on Fragrantica, signed by him, speaks of "the same passion leading the Rubini family business in perfumery since 80 years".

The partnership with Cristiano Canali sits at the centre of how the company presents itself. Its concept page opens with the heading "At the origin, a creative friendship" and describes the two men working "in close dialogue", each fragrance taking shape "through time, listening, and intuition" [3]. When ÇaFleureBon reviewed the debut in 2015, it introduced Canali as a perfume trainee from IFF who had won the Critics Award at "The Scent of Esxence – 5 Years of Excellence". The brand's Italian-language page now credits him as a perfumer at Mane [4]. The same review named the fragrance expert Ermano Picco as part of the team behind Fundamental.

History & milestones

RUBINI entered the market with a single fragrance. Fundamental was shown for the first time at Esxence 2015 in Milan, where the perfume caught early press attention. There the ÇaFleureBon contributor Berkan Basoglu was introduced to Andrea Rubini by Antonio Gardoni of Bogue Profumo. Basoglu's review, published in May 2015, placed the perfume "directly into the 'marvelous' category" [11]. At the end of the year the same publication named it Best Fragrance of 2015, a title shared with Tiziana Terenzi's Ursa.

The collection then grew slowly. Fragrantica lists seven RUBINI perfumes, the earliest from 2015 and the newest from 2026, all composed by Canali. Besides Fundamental, the line includes Tambour Sacré, Nuvolari, Odenaturae, Hyperion, Idilios and L'Eau Très Mer. Fundamental is still part of the range; the brand currently sells it under the label "Edition 2.023".

In April 2026 the company announced that Idilios was a finalist in the Best Independent Perfume category of the Accademia del Profumo awards [10]. In August 2026 it published "L'Eau Très Mer – The Movie", a film for its newest fragrance, filmed and directed by Andrea Purcarea [9].

Philosophy & positioning

RUBINI treats perfumery as a cultural pursuit rather than a product category. The company calls its work "an Italian collaboration, where perfumery becomes a cultural and expressive act". It sums up its values in three words: stupor, wonder and curiosity. Its homepage speaks to people "drawn to wonder, to curiosity, to a different point of view", under the line "They promise the unexpected". The concept page adds that Andrea Rubini likes the word "surprise".

According to the brand, his development work searches for an olfactory harmony built from "overlapping and reminiscences", reached with Canali over years of planning "without predefined schemes". RUBINI sets itself apart not only from mainstream fragrance but from what it calls "the stereotypes of modern perfumery, even the so called niche one". Canali, quoted on the same page, describes the perfumes as "a balanced mix of contrasts and harmony". He says the aim was to recreate "a contemporary classic" by mixing traditional ingredients with newer materials. The same text speaks of "the obsessive search for perfection, beauty and detail" behind the formulas, and credits Canali's work for the way "every element blends without prevailing".

Storytelling runs through the whole line. Each perfume is built around a narrative: a family shop in 1930s Verona, a racing driver, a wood held sacred in parts of Africa. The brand-supplied text on Fragrantica describes RUBINI as an Italian independent brand "conceiving perfumery as an artistic expression". The review site ScentVerdict reads the house the same way, calling its perfumes "strongly narrative" and often built around a motif tied to Italian history, places or personal memories [14].

Products & innovation

Fundamental is the perfume through which the company tells its origin story. RUBINI presents it as Andrea Rubini's "inedited and original interpretation of the aromatic style". It opens on bergamot, mandarin, white grapes and lavender. The heart holds Italian iris butter, clary sage and absolutes of beeswax and cacao, over a base of a leather accord, vetiver, labdanum, Atlas cedarwood and sandalwood. The brand describes the arc as "the luminous daytime that turns into nocturnal pleasure", an echo of the days and nights in Pietro Rubini's Verona. ScentVerdict reads the perfume as a homage to the original family perfumery.

Nuvolari, sold as a 50 ml extrait de parfum, is described by the company as "a hymn to the madness of a racer, able to challenge death". Its notes pair neroli, black pepper and vetiver with rum CO2, Bulgarian rose and oud from Laos. Three accords are meant to suggest the race itself: fuel, motor racing and asphalt. ScentVerdict says the scent reimagines the world of Italian motor racing. The same site describes Odenaturae as a turn towards Mediterranean landscapes, with green and herbal notes such as tomato leaf and immortelle.

Tambour Sacré comes in a case of iroko. Sainte Cellier describes the wood as coming from "a tree sacred to many African peoples" [13]. Hyperion and Idilios complete the line, with L'Eau Très Mer as the newest addition.

Packaging is treated as part of each perfume's concept. Francesca Gotti designs the cases, and the brand says that each "shell protects and introduces the story it holds". ÇaFleureBon and Sainte Cellier report that the cases for Fundamental and Nuvolari are made of Glebanite, a recycled fibreglass material. ScentVerdict adds that the composite was previously used for satellite dishes. The brand's own website does not describe the material, and no sustainability commitments or third-party certifications are documented for RUBINI.

Recognition

ÇaFleureBon has followed the brand since its debut. Its "Best (and Worst) Perfumes of 2015", compiled by editor-in-chief Michelyn Camen and contributor Berkan Basoglu, gave the Best Fragrance of the Year title jointly to Fundamental and Tiziana Terenzi's Ursa [12]. The list said Andrea Bissoli Rubini had "launched a singular perfume that stood out from all others this year".

In 2026 Idilios was a finalist for Best Independent Perfume at the Accademia del Profumo awards. As of the brand's April 2026 announcement, only finalist status was reported.

Current status

RUBINI is an active, independently run house; no parent company or outside owner is documented. The company posted on its blog in April and August 2026, and its newest fragrance, L'Eau Très Mer, appeared in 2026. It sells through its own online shop and through 34 stockists listed on its website, spread across Europe, the Middle East, Mexico and the United States [7].
