Summary

Overview

4711 is a German fragrance house from Cologne, built around one of the oldest scents still in production: the Original Eau de Cologne known in German as Echt Kölnisch Wasser. The company dates its origins to 1792 [1], when, as the long-repeated legend goes, a Carthusian monk gave the young merchant Wilhelm Mülhens the recipe for an "aqua mirabilis," or miracle water, as a wedding present. Mülhens turned that medicinal formula into a perfume, and more than two centuries later the same citrus-and-herb blend still anchors the brand.

Today 4711 is no longer independent. It belongs to the German perfume maker Mäurer & Wirtz, itself part of the Dalli Group, which took the brand over from Procter & Gamble in the second half of the 2000s [6]. Production remains active, with current collections sold under the 4711 name and a flagship Fragrance House operating in Cologne.

Origin and the name

The story 4711 tells about itself begins on 8 October 1792, the date it assigns to the monk's wedding gift to the 30-year-old Mülhens [6]. He set up a small distillery and fragrance factory in Cologne's Glockengasse and first sold the product as "Aqua Mirabilis" — at the outset, the company says, as a drink rather than a perfume. Only in 1810, when a new rule required medicinal recipes to be disclosed, did he relabel it and sell it openly as an eau de cologne.

The number itself comes from the building. At the end of the 18th century Cologne was under French control, and French troops had the city's houses numbered for easier orientation; the house where Mülhens worked was given the number 4711. To set his cologne apart from competitors, he adopted the memorable house number as its name.

The founding date is not entirely settled. While the company consistently traces itself to 1792, Wikipedia notes that the Original Eau de Cologne has been produced in Cologne "since at least 1799," the basis on which it carries the protected designation "Original Eau de Cologne" [6]. The two dates describe slightly different things — the brand's own founding legend versus the earliest documented production — and 4711 has long counted its anniversaries from 1792, celebrating its 225th in 2017 [9].

The Farina dispute

The brand's early history is tangled up with one of the most famous naming feuds in perfume. Eau de cologne as a category traces back to the Farina family, Italian-born perfumers working in Cologne in the early 18th century. 4711's original registered name was "Franz Maria Farina, Glockengasse 4711, Cöln," and the Farina descendants — who made their own eau de cologne — objected to the Mülhens family's use of the Farina name [8]. The quarrel ran for roughly eighty years. It ended in 1881, when the Mülhens side conceded and re-registered the business as "Eau de Cologne- und Parfümerie-Fabrik Glockengasse 4711" [8].

Ownership

4711 stayed in Mülhens family hands for generations before passing through a series of larger corporate owners. In 1994 the family company was bought by Wella AG of Darmstadt, and Wella in turn was taken over by Procter & Gamble in 2003 [6]. P&G then sold 4711 on: the sale was announced in December 2006, and the takeover by Mäurer & Wirtz of Aachen — a subsidiary of the Dalli Group — was recorded as completed in 2007 [6][7]. Alongside 4711, Mäurer & Wirtz also acquired the related brands Tosca, Sir Irisch Moos and Extase in the same deal. The parent company itself began as a Stolberg soapworks founded in 1845, and has belonged to the Dalli Group since 1990 [7].

Products and positioning

At the centre of the range sits 4711 Original Eau de Cologne, whose seven main ingredients, according to the company, have stayed unchanged since 1792 [3]. It is a fresh, citrus-led scent — bergamot, lemon and orange lifted by lavender and rosemary, with the bitter-orange note of neroli. The flacon is recognisable in its own right, with a turquoise-and-gold label and a red cap; the hexagonal bottle shape goes back to a design by the distiller Peter Heinrich Molanus in 1820.

Around that classic, the house has added newer lines, including 4711 Acqua Colonia, the 4711 Floral Collection and 4711 Remix, the last introduced for the 225-year anniversary. The brand also reaches into body and home products such as shower gels, body splashes and candles. 4711 positions itself firmly around tradition, the city of Cologne and "Made in Germany" craftsmanship, and the Original Eau de Cologne has become a widely recognised, inexpensive German souvenir.

The brand's physical anchor is the 4711 Fragrance House at Glockengasse 4 in Cologne, a short walk from the cathedral, where a carillon rings on the hour and visitors can sample the scent at a fragrance fountain. The company says the house draws more than 100,000 visitors a year.

Current status

4711 remains in active production under Mäurer & Wirtz, with a live online shop and current collections, but it is owned by a parent company rather than run independently. Its most recent landmark moment was the 2017 anniversary, marked by the Remix launch and a refresh of the Glockengasse flagship [9]. As a continuously produced 18th-century formula, the Original Eau de Cologne stands among the oldest fragrances still on the market.
