Overview
s.Oliver is a German fashion company founded in 1969, best known for apparel but also present in beauty through a licensed fragrance line sold under the same name. The parent business, the s.Oliver Group (formally s.Oliver Bernd Freier GmbH & Co. KG), is headquartered in Rottendorf, near Würzburg, and ranks among Europe's larger fashion companies. Its perfumes are not made in-house: they are produced under license by the German fragrance house Mäurer & Wirtz [5].
The fragrance line remains active. Its current collection, s.Oliver United, is sold across German and wider European retail, from drugstore chains such as Müller, Rossmann and dm to perfumery and online sellers including Douglas, Flaconi and Parfumdreams.
Origin & founders
The company began in 1969, when Bernd Freier opened a small boutique of about 25 square metres in Würzburg, selling clothes himself [2][3]. It was originally called Sir Oliver, a name Freier took from a character in Charles Dickens's novel Oliver Twist [2].
That first name did not last. In 1978, after a trademark dispute with the maker of 4711 cologne, "Sir Oliver" was changed to "s.Oliver" [2]. The shortened name was later registered with the German Patent and Trademark Office. The business grew well beyond its single shop over the following decades, opening its first store outside Germany in Austria in 1998 and passing one billion euros in annual turnover in 2007.
Ownership
The fashion brand sits within the s.Oliver Group, which over time built a portfolio through several acquisitions: the comma womenswear label in 2001 [3], LIEBESKIND BERLIN in 2011 [3], and lala Berlin in 2023 [3]. Founder Bernd Freier led the company until 2014 and stepped away from management in November 2019, when Claus-Dietrich Lahrs became chief executive [2].
The beauty side follows a different structure. s.Oliver perfumes are made under a licensing arrangement by Mäurer & Wirtz, a fragrance house based in Stolberg, in North Rhine-Westphalia [5]. According to Mäurer & Wirtz, its portfolio of licensed brands includes s.Oliver and Otto Kern [5]. Manufacturing takes place in Germany.
Products & positioning
Fragrance was a comparatively late addition to the s.Oliver name. The first editions, s.Oliver Hot Edition for men and women, appeared in 2006 [8]. Later releases included So Pure Men in 2017 and the Black Label men's and women's scents in 2018 [8]. The current line is s.Oliver United, a pair of complementary men's and women's fragrances; the women's scent is built around bergamot, mandarin and pear over a musk and cedarwood base, while the men's opens on lemon and rosemary with patchouli and moss beneath.
The line is positioned as accessible, lifestyle-oriented fragrance rather than luxury perfumery, reflected in its distribution through drugstores alongside larger perfumery retailers. The company frames the range around the idea of togetherness, stating that what matters is not what one owns but with whom one shares life, and describing s.Oliver United as more than a perfume.
Current status
The s.Oliver fragrance line is active. Its dedicated website presents the current United collection, and the perfumes remain in broad European distribution through both drugstore and online channels, with production continuing under the licensee partnership with Mäurer & Wirtz [1].
