Overview
Route 66 is a men's fragrance brand created and licensed by the German fragrance house Mäurer & Wirtz, launched in September 2021 [4]. Though its name and imagery evoke the historic American highway, the brand is a product line of the Stolberg-based parent company rather than an independent American house. Its stated concept treats the "Mother of all Roads" as a metaphor for freedom and masculinity, expressed through a range of eau de toilette scents sold across European pharmacy and supermarket retail.
The line remains active. Its most recent identified launch, "Feel the Night", appeared in July 2023 [9], while parent company Mäurer & Wirtz has continued to expand its wider portfolio into 2025.
Origins
Route 66 was introduced in early September 2021 as one of two new fragrance brands launched that year by Mäurer & Wirtz, alongside Les Destinations [4]. It is a corporate product line with no named individual founder; the perfumer credited with the original scents is Claire Liégent, according to the fragrance specialist publication Fragrantica [8].
The brand takes its name and visual language from the roughly 2,500-mile U.S. highway. Marketing materials reference riding a Harley past abandoned cars and roadside diners, stopping at remote bars, and reaching the Grand Canyon. Despite this American framing, the country of origin is Germany: the highway is thematic inspiration only, and Route 66 is produced by an established German company.
A separate, unrelated "Route 66" eau de toilette was released by Coty around 1997. That earlier license is a different product and is not connected to the Mäurer & Wirtz brand.
Products
The line launched with an initial trio of scents: "Easy Way of Life", "The Road to Paradise is Rough" and "From Coast to Coast" [8]. According to the company, these were positioned as a fragrance set built around freshness, liveliness, character and seduction. Later additions include "Born to be Wild", which the brand describes as "an adventurous fragrance that awakens adrenaline", and "Feel the Night".
"Feel the Night", added in July 2023, is a woody-citrus eau de toilette. Its composition opens on pepper, bergamot and grapefruit, moves through a heart of magnolia, heliotrope and rose, and settles on a base of amber, patchouli and vetiver. Mäurer & Wirtz characterises it as "masculine – woody – cool", and its bottle carries a silver-metallic cap the company likens to the fuel cap of a vintage motorcycle. The fragrances are offered as eau de toilette in 100 ml bottles.
Positioning
Route 66 presents itself as a line of distinctly masculine fragrances themed on the freedom and adventure associated with the American highway. In its own words, the brand "encapsulates an untamed lifestyle expressed in distinctively masculine fragrances", built around what it calls freshness, vibrancy, character and seduction. Its stated values center on freedom, masculinity, adventure and authenticity, and it carries the tagline "Feel the Freedom".
The scents are sold across multiple channels. From mid-July 2023, "Feel the Night" was made available in selected pharmacies and supermarkets as well as through their online shops [9], placing the line in the drugstore price segment rather than prestige retail.
Ownership
Route 66 is owned and licensed by Mäurer & Wirtz, a family-run fragrance manufacturer founded in 1845 in Stolberg, near Aachen, by Michael Mäurer and his stepson Andreas August Wirtz, who opened a soap factory [4]. The business later expanded into washing powders and then cosmetics and fragrances, restructured as Mäurer & Wirtz GmbH & Co. KG in 1990, and operates today as an independent subsidiary of the Dalli Group [7]. The company describes itself as active in more than 100 markets and among the three largest fragrance manufacturers in Germany, and it remains fully owned by the Wirtz family.
Sources differ on which generation now leads the company. Both the Wikipedia entry for Mäurer & Wirtz and the company's own English history page describe it as run by the fifth generation of the Wirtz family, naming joint chief executive Hermann Wirtz [7]; a separate company-overview page instead refers to the sixth generation [10].
Beyond Route 66, the parent company's portfolio includes long-established fragrance and cosmetics names such as 4711 and Tabac, alongside lifestyle and licensed brands including Baldessarini, Betty Barclay and s.Oliver. Its acquisition history includes the Baldessarini fragrance business, taken over from Procter & Gamble in 2012 [4], and, in 2025, the Tom Tailor fragrance license and the distribution companies Herbert Stricker Classic Parfums and The Nose Behind [4]. The same year marked the company's 180th anniversary.
Current status
Route 66 is an active brand line. Its last identified product launch is "Feel the Night" in July 2023 [9], and no discontinuation has been recorded. The line is distributed across European pharmacy and supermarket retail, including the Nordic markets. Its parent, Mäurer & Wirtz, remained highly active through 2025, marking its 180th anniversary and completing further acquisitions.
