Summary

Overview

Sir Irisch Moos is a German men's fragrance and grooming line, best known for an aromatic cologne inspired by the Irish countryside. The scent was launched in 1969 by "Sir", a German shaving-supplier brand whose name is said to derive from the German verb rasieren, "to shave" [5]. It later passed to Procter & Gamble and, in 2007, to the family-owned German firm Mäurer & Wirtz, which markets and manufactures it today [4]. The brand remains active: its products are sold across several European markets, including Denmark, in 2026 [7].

The line is built around a single long-running scent. According to one reviewer, Sir Irisch Moos is "the only remaining product from the brand" [5], with the fragrance now standing in for the marque as a whole.

Origin

The fragrance appeared in 1969 [5]. Its Irish theme is central to the marketing: Mäurer & Wirtz describes the cologne as "a masculine fragrance reminiscent of lush Irish nature" and names Ireland, "the Green Island brimming with lush pastures and clear air," as its inspiration. According to one account, the scent was originally intended to carry the name "Irish Mist" (Irischer Nebel) before reaching the market as Irisch Moos. Despite the name, the fragrance was neither made in Ireland nor initially marketed there.

There is a difference in the record over what "founding year" means for this brand. Third-party fragrance writers date the scent itself to 1969 [5], while the company history of its present owner, Mäurer & Wirtz, begins in 1845 — the year Michael Mäurer and his stepson Andreas August Wirtz established a soapworks in Stolberg, near Aachen [4]. The 1845 date belongs to the owner, a soap and fragrance house, rather than to the Sir Irisch Moos scent, which was created much later and acquired by that company only in 2007 [4].

Ownership

Sir Irisch Moos is owned by Mäurer & Wirtz, a fifth-generation family business headquartered in Stolberg, Germany, and itself a subsidiary of the Dalli Group since 1990 [4]. Mäurer & Wirtz acquired the brand in 2007, taking it over from Procter & Gamble together with 4711, Tosca and Extase [4]. Within the owner's portfolio it sits in the beauty segment alongside names such as Tabac, Tosca and 4711.

Philosophy & positioning

The brand is positioned as a durable men's classic rather than a seasonal launch. Mäurer & Wirtz presents the cologne as "the timeless men's fragrance classic" and stresses "a formula that has remained unchanged for decades," adding that "its spicy originality makes the classic more up-to-date than ever." The feature line used on the owner's brand page is "Sir Irisch Moos – the power of nature." The house describes the character as masculine, fresh and spicy, drawing on moss and herbal notes.

Products

The signature product is the Sir Irisch Moos Eau de Toilette, sold as a men's fragrance. Around it sits a wet-shaving and grooming range that, according to retail listings, includes after shave in both lotion and balm forms, deodorant in spray and stick formats, and barber cream and barber soap [7]. Descriptions of the scent point to a green, herbal profile: citrus top notes such as bergamot and lemon, aromatic herbs including rosemary and lavender, and a mossy, woody base built on oakmoss, patchouli and cedar.

Reviewers disagree on how to classify the scent. The Scented Devil calls it a green aromatic fougère and "a missing link between the darker British Sterling and the soaper Paco Rabanne pour Homme (1973)" [5]. The blog From Pyrgos instead reads it as an old-fashioned French chypre, "Mitsouko done on the cheap" [6]. Both are individual reviewers' assessments rather than the company's own description.

Current status

The brand is active. Its products remain in retail circulation across European markets, with multiple Danish retailers stocking the fragrance and grooming line in 2026, and the owner maintains a current brand page for it [7]. Reflecting the line's long history, one reviewer notes that Sir Irisch Moos is now the sole surviving product carried under the name.
