Summary

Overview

CeraVe is an American skincare brand founded in 2005 [2], built around the idea that many common skin complaints — acne, eczema, psoriasis, ordinary dryness — share a single underlying cause: a weakened skin barrier. Its products are formulated with ceramides, the lipids that help hold skin cells together, and the company positions the line as affordable, dermatologist-developed skincare available without a prescription. Since 2017 it has been owned by the French group L'Oréal [5], where it sits within the L'Oréal Dermatological Beauty division. CeraVe is sold in more than 40 countries and counts the United States as its home market.

The brand reached a far wider audience than its low-key, pharmacy-aisle origins suggested after a 2020 surge in social-media attention turned it into one of the most talked-about names in mass-market skincare.

Origin and founders

CeraVe was developed in 2005 by a group of US dermatologists working in partnership with Coria Laboratories, a privately held American company specialising in dermatological products [6]. The starting point was an observation shared across very different conditions: that acne, eczema, psoriasis and dry skin often trace back to a compromised skin barrier. The response was a line designed to restore that barrier, launched in the United States with three core products — a moisturising cream, a moisturising lotion and a hydrating cleanser.

Sources differ on a few details of the brand's earliest history. CeraVe's own site and Wikipedia both date the founding to 2005 [2][5], while one editorial history describes the products as developed in 2005 and launched in 2006 [6]. The question of who founded the brand is also recorded inconsistently: the Wikipedia infobox names Bausch Health as founder [5], but Bausch (then Valeant) only entered the picture through its later acquisition of Coria Laboratories, and editorial and trademark records identify Coria and its dermatologist collaborators as the original developers. The brand's name reflects its formula — "Cera" from ceramides and "Ve" from its MultiVesicular Emulsion technology.

History and milestones

After its 2005 launch, ownership of CeraVe changed hands twice. In 2008, Coria Laboratories was acquired by Valeant Pharmaceuticals International for $95 million [6]. Nearly a decade later, in 2017, L'Oréal bought CeraVe — along with the AcneFree and Ambi brands — for $1.3 billion [5].

The brand's most significant cultural moment came in 2020. Between March and October that year, the skincare influencer Hyram Yarbro repeatedly promoted CeraVe to his audience; his videos generated a reported $3.2 million in media impact value, and the brand recorded an 89% increase in global sales over the year [5]. CeraVe later leaned into mainstream advertising, running a 2024 Super Bowl LVIII commercial that cast the actor Michael Cera and played on the resemblance between his name and the brand's. In 2025 the company marked its 20th anniversary with five new product launches [7], and in 2026 it signed the NBA player Kevin Durant to an endorsement deal reported to be worth $2 million [5].

Ownership

CeraVe is a subsidiary of L'Oréal, which acquired it in 2017 and places it within its L'Oréal Dermatological Beauty division [5]. Within the wider L'Oréal portfolio it sits alongside other dermatological and mass-market names such as La Roche-Posay's stablemates Vichy and Garnier, as well as Kiehl's, Maybelline and Lancôme.

Philosophy and positioning

The brand's central premise is that barrier health underpins healthy skin, and its tagline — "Developed with dermatologists" — frames that collaboration as core rather than cosmetic. The company describes the partnership as "more than a line in our logo," saying dermatologists have been involved since its founding in 2005 and continue to shape its product range. CeraVe also emphasises accessibility, presenting itself as a way to obtain dermatologist-approved skincare without a prescription. In the United States it has cited IQVIA ProVoice survey data to describe itself as the country's number-one dermatologist-recommended skincare brand.

Products and innovation

CeraVe's range spans facial cleansers, serums, moisturisers, body care, eye creams, makeup removers, sunscreens and baby skincare. The formulas are built on three essential ceramides — ceramides 1, 3 and 6-II — combined with fatty acids and lipids intended to match the skin's own barrier. Other recurring ingredients include hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, salicylic acid, retinol and petrolatum. According to the company, its products are fragrance-free, non-comedogenic and allergy-tested.

The technology the brand most closely associates with itself is its MultiVesicular Emulsion (MVE) delivery system. CeraVe describes MVE as a sphere of layers that dissolves slowly, releasing active ingredients into the skin over time, which it says allows a single application to keep hydrating skin through the day.

Current status

CeraVe is an active, L'Oréal-owned brand with global distribution. Its most recent visible activity is the July 2025 release marking its 20th anniversary with five new products [7], alongside ongoing endorsement deals into 2026 and availability in more than 40 countries.
