Overview
Exuviance is an American dermatologist-developed skincare brand built around exfoliating acid chemistry. It belongs to NeoStrata Company, Inc., the New Jersey firm founded by dermatologists Eugene Van Scott and Ruey Yu, and sits today within the consumer-health group Kenvue [6][7]. The brand is named for "exuviation," the shedding of surface skin cells, and centres its range on alpha hydroxy acids and the gentler polyhydroxy acids its founders helped bring into skincare.
The brand remains active. Its e-commerce site carries a 2026 copyright and current product launches, and NeoStrata reports that its two main brands, NeoStrata and Exuviance, are sold across roughly 87 countries [7].
Origin and founders
Exuviance traces back to the research of Drs. Eugene Van Scott and Ruey Yu, two dermatologists credited with identifying the beneficial effects of alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) on human skin around 1974 [7]. The pair later formalised their work as a company, founding NeoStrata in 1988 — originally under the name Polystrata, in Branford, Connecticut [6][7]. According to the brand's account, the founders' work led to "the benefits of Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Polyhydroxy Acids and the first AHA Peel," and ultimately to over 100 patents and publications [1].
The Exuviance consumer line was developed under the NeoStrata umbrella and launched in the 1990s. Sources differ on how to date the brand: the company's own story page does not state an explicit founding year, while trade and corporate sources give 1988 — the founding year of the parent NeoStrata Company under which Exuviance sits [1][6].
Ownership
Johnson & Johnson announced its acquisition of NeoStrata Company in April 2016, buying the firm together with its affiliates and parent company TriStrata; financial terms were not disclosed [6]. The deal brought a portfolio that included NeoStrata, Exuviance, CoverBlend and Psorent into Johnson & Johnson's consumer business. That consumer division was later spun off as Kenvue, which is now the brand's parent [6]. Within Kenvue, Exuviance sits alongside skincare and personal-care names such as Aveeno, Clean & Clear, Piz Buin and Neutrogena's stablemates. Day-to-day, the brand's website continues to be published by NeoStrata Company, Inc., which it states is "solely responsible for its contents."
Philosophy and positioning
The brand's name encodes its central idea: products are meant to "encourage healthy skin renewal through exuviation – the shedding of surface cells to reveal younger, healthier-looking skin." Exuviance frames its approach around prevention, summed up in the motto "Don't wait, start to Prejuvenate!" — a coinage the company uses to present small daily steps as the basis for healthier skin over time. It positions itself as a dermatologist-developed range addressing concerns such as fine lines, post-acne marks, sagging and dark spots, and says it continues to collaborate with dermatologists on its formulas.
Exuviance is sold as a prestige skincare line, distributed in its home market through spas, salons and specialty retailers [7]. The brand also states a commitment to inclusivity across skin tones, describing diversity as part of its outlook.
Products and innovation
The range is built on exfoliating and renewal chemistry. Alongside alpha hydroxy acids, Exuviance highlights polyhydroxy and bionic acids and a proprietary ingredient it calls NeoGlucosamine, which it describes as part of "gentle Polyhydroxy/Bionic Acid or NeoGlucosamine formulations." Product families include the AGE REVERSE+ line and treatment items such as the Performance Peel AP25 and a Pure Retinol Correcting Peel. A separate corrective makeup line, CoverBlend, was used from 2001 to cover port-wine stains, birthmarks and tattoos, and has since been discontinued.
The company makes specific performance claims for some products, stating in marketing that a product "boosts youthful radiance by 212%" and that "100% instantly saw more radiant skin." Exuviance says its products are made in the United States, "with the exception of just a few products."
Sustainability and ethics
Exuviance states that it does not test its products or ingredients on animals "in the creation of [its] cosmetics or personal care products." On packaging, the company says it introduced its first post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic packaging in early 2022 and moved to recyclable shipping boxes for all orders, framing these steps within a broader aim to reduce packaging waste and source materials responsibly. It also lists a range of substances it formulates without, including oxybenzone, phthalates, hydroquinone and sodium lauryl sulfate. The brand does not publish formal third-party certifications.
Current status
Exuviance is an active, currently trading brand. Its website shows a current product range and a 2026 copyright notice from NeoStrata Company, Inc., and the company describes a global footprint of roughly 87 countries across its NeoStrata and Exuviance lines [7]. The brand operates as a subsidiary brand within Kenvue.
