Overview
Maui Moisture is an American mass-market haircare brand built around tropical-island botanicals, sold at drugstore prices. It was launched in January 2017 by Vogue International, the Clearwater, Florida company behind the OGX hair range. The line is now owned by Kenvue, the consumer-health company spun off from Johnson & Johnson in 2023 [6].
The brand's founding date is sometimes conflated with that of its parent. Maui Moisture itself launched in 2017 [2], while Vogue International, which created it, was founded in 1987 by Todd Christopher [3]. Some review and aggregator sites date the brand to 1987 by attributing the parent's founding year to the product line.
Origin
Maui Moisture was created by Vogue International, a hair-care company that also developed the OGX brand. Its central idea is a formulation choice the company highlights on its own site: where most shampoos and conditioners begin with deionized, chemically treated water as their main ingredient, Maui Moisture instead starts with a blend of aloe vera and pure coconut water [1]. The range takes its name and theme from Hawaii, described by the company as "inspired by ingredients that can be found in tropical islands like Maui."
The line reached the US market in January 2017 across roughly 40,000 retail doors, including Ulta, Walgreens, CVS, Target, Walmart and Kroger, at a price of about nine dollars per product. Trade coverage framed the launch as bringing the food-world "superfood" trend into the hair-care aisle. International expansion followed, reaching Asia and Australia by the summer of 2017 and Europe in 2018 [2].
Ownership
Maui Moisture has been part of a large corporate group since before its public profile grew. In 2016, Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc. agreed to acquire Vogue International — including OGX, FX, Maui Moisture and Proganix — for $3.3 billion [3]. At the time, founder Todd Christopher held the controlling stake, with the private-equity firm The Carlyle Group holding a minority interest; the brands were sold in the United States and 38 countries.
In 2023, Johnson & Johnson spun off its consumer-health business as a separate listed company, Kenvue, and Maui Moisture moved under the new owner alongside brands such as Aveeno, OGX, Clean & Clear and Piz Buin. Trade press later reported that Kenvue was weighing the divestiture of some of its smaller beauty brands, including Maui Moisture, while keeping larger names such as Neutrogena and Aveeno [6].
Philosophy & positioning
The brand markets itself on natural-sounding, tropical formulations and a set of free-from claims. According to Maui Moisture, its products are eco-friendly and vegan, and are made without silicones, parabens, sulfated surfactants or mineral oil [1]; editorial reviews additionally describe the range as gluten-free. The company has not been documented as holding formal third-party certifications; the claims are self-declared.
Its products are organized by hair type and concern — moisture, curls, anti-breakage and similar — and the brand targets people with curly, wavy or coily hair, and with dry or damaged hair, who are seeking affordable, natural haircare [5]. In its community messaging the brand also addresses Black women and underserved communities, framing a connection between hair and mental wellbeing.
Products & innovation
Maui Moisture is a haircare-only brand, spanning shampoos, conditioners, styling products and treatments across several themed ranges built around a hero ingredient. Hero botanicals used across the line include aloe vera, coconut water, coconut milk, coconut oil, shea butter, agave nectar, hibiscus water and bamboo fibers. Launch ranges included Heal & Hydrate + Shea Butter, Nourish & Moisture + Coconut Milk, Curl Quench + Coconut Oil, Anti-Breakage + Agave Nectar and Thicken & Restore + Bamboo Fibers [2].
History & milestones
Beyond its 2017 launch and international rollout, the brand has reported a series of community initiatives. In 2023 it pledged $250,000 to the relief organization Direct Relief following the Lahaina wildfires on Maui, partnering with Feeding America and the Maui Food Bank. In 2024 it awarded $100,000 to PsychoHairapy, a training program addressing hair and mental wellbeing in underserved communities [4].
Current status
Maui Moisture is active. It remains in retail distribution across the United States and a number of international markets, and documented brand activity continues through 2024 [4]. Its parent, Kenvue, has reportedly considered divesting the brand as part of a wider review of its smaller beauty lines, but no sale had been recorded at the time of the reporting [6].
