Overview
Aveeno is an American skin care and hair care brand built around a single ingredient: the oat. It was founded in 1945 by two brothers, Sidney and Albert Musher, who worked with the Mayo Clinic to study how finely milled oats could soothe dry and irritated skin [2]. The name comes from Avena sativa, the botanical name for the common oat. The brand remains active and global, sold across pharmacies and general retail, and is positioned around dermatologist-recommended, sensitive-skin formulas.
Today Aveeno is owned by Kenvue, the consumer-health company that Johnson & Johnson spun off in 2023 [2]. Its ownership is also in transition: in November 2025 Kimberly-Clark announced an agreement to acquire Kenvue, a deal that would bring Aveeno under new ownership but had not closed as of mid-2026 (see Ownership).

Origin and founders
The brand traces to 1945, when American brothers Sidney and Albert Musher set out, in the words of owner Kenvue, "to show that the key to human health was found in nature" [3]. Working alongside the Mayo Clinic, they experimented with oats and found that finely milling colloidal oatmeal could help calm dry, sensitive skin. Their first product was Aveeno Soothing Bath Treatment, and the brand took its name from the oat's scientific name, Avena sativa. In 1961 the company was renamed Aveeno Pharmaceuticals [2].
History and milestones
Aveeno expanded steadily from a single bath treatment into a broad personal-care range. In 2001 it added soy and stress-relief lines and launched Aveeno Baby; in 2004 it entered facial care with the Positively Radiant line. By 2014, according to Wikipedia, the brand's body-care products had passed 100 million US dollars in US sales and ranked third in market share [2]. The brand marked its 80th year in 2025.
Ownership
Aveeno has changed hands several times. After its renaming in 1961 it was acquired by Cooper Laboratories, then bought by S.C. Johnson & Son in 1984. Johnson & Johnson purchased the skin care business in 1999, and in 2023 spun off its consumer-health division as Kenvue, an independent public company; Aveeno became a Kenvue brand [2]. Within the Kenvue portfolio it sits alongside brands such as Johnson's, Neutrogena, Clean & Clear and OGX.
Ownership is currently contested by a pending transaction. On 3 November 2025, Kimberly-Clark announced a 48.7-billion-dollar agreement to acquire Kenvue, which would place Aveeno under Kimberly-Clark; shareholders approved the deal in January 2026, with closing targeted for the second half of 2026, subject to regulatory approval [4]. As of mid-2026 the acquisition had not completed, so the brand's legal owner remained Kenvue, with Kimberly-Clark recorded as the announced acquirer.
Products and innovation
Oat is the through-line of the catalogue. Aveeno states that all of its body products still contain oat extracts or colloidal oatmeal, and it markets the avenanthramides drawn from oats under the name Active Naturals. The company also describes an Active Naturals Triple Oat Complex, combining avenanthramides, oat oil and colloidal oatmeal, intended to moisturise and support the skin barrier. Long-running products include the Daily Moisturizing Lotion and the Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Cream, the latter recognised by the National Eczema Association, while newer launches include the Calm + Restore Oat Gel Moisturizer.
The brand leans heavily on clinical framing. According to Kenvue, Aveeno's research team has published more than 80 clinical studies in scientific journals since 2001, and its colloidal-oatmeal eczema products have been evaluated in more than 25 studies involving over 2,500 patients [3]. Aveeno itself cites more than 75 years of clinical research on sensitive skin. Aveeno Baby products have been certified by the third-party environmental program UL ECOLOGO [3].
Recognition
Aveeno products have appeared in industry award lists. The Calm + Restore Oat Gel Moisturizer and the Tone + Texture Body Scrub were named in Allure's 2024 Best of Beauty awards [3]. The Daily Moisturizing Lotion is a long-standing drugstore staple frequently cited in beauty press. In January 2013 the brand named actress Jennifer Aniston as a spokesperson, succeeding Daniella van Graas [2].
Current status
Aveeno is an active, globally distributed brand. Its most recent visible activity includes the 2024 Allure awards, newer product lines, and the pending Kimberly-Clark acquisition of its parent company Kenvue, announced in 2025 and shareholder-approved in early 2026 but not yet closed [4].
