Summary

Overview

OGX is an American hair-care brand built around naturally-derived ingredients such as argan oil, coconut and keratin, sold at drugstore prices in the United States and dozens of international markets. It began life under the name Organix and is now owned by Kenvue, the consumer-health company spun off from Johnson & Johnson, which acquired the brand's parent in 2016 [2][3].

The brand sits in an unusual position: commercially active and still launching products, yet no longer independent. Following the acquisition, OGX is best described as an acquired brand operating inside a large corporate portfolio rather than a standalone company.

Origin

OGX was created by a former hairdresser and originally launched as a line called Organix, focused on recognisable, naturally-derived extracts including argan oil of Morocco, coconut milk, shea and Brazilian keratin. It was developed under Vogue International, a Clearwater, Florida company, and the brand has been associated with that Florida base throughout its history.

The brand's founding date is reported in two different ways depending on what is being counted. Vogue International, the parent company, was founded in 1987 [5]. The OGX (Organix) product line itself is dated to around 2006 [7]. The 1987 figure, repeated in trade and editorial coverage, refers to the parent company rather than the OGX line, which launched roughly two decades later.

At some point the line was renamed from Organix to OGX [3]. The Organix name remains relevant as the brand's earlier identity and still appears in older references.

Ownership

OGX's parent, Vogue International, drew outside investment from The Carlyle Group, which took a stake through its Carlyle Partners VI fund in 2014. Two years later, in 2016, Johnson & Johnson Consumer agreed to acquire Vogue International — and with it OGX — for 3.3 billion dollars [3]. According to Kenvue, OGX joined what is now the Kenvue family in 2016, the year of that acquisition [2]. When Johnson & Johnson separated its consumer-health business into the independent company Kenvue in 2023, OGX moved with it.

Within the Kenvue portfolio, OGX sits alongside personal-care names including Johnson's, Aveeno, Clean & Clear, Piz Buin, Le Petit Marseillais and Maui Moisture.

At the time of the 2016 deal, Vogue International's total annual sales were reported at roughly 400 million dollars, and OGX had climbed from the number-eight to the number-five shampoo and conditioner brand in Nielsen rankings [3].

Products & positioning

OGX is built primarily on shampoos and conditioners, extended into styling and treatment products and a smaller range of body and bath items. Its formulas are organised around familiar hero ingredients — argan oil, coconut oil and coconut milk, keratin, biotin, tea tree, hyaluronic acid and peptides — each tied to a named collection.

The company positions OGX as a repair-focused brand, describing itself on its own site as being "from the #1 hair repair brand" and dedicated, in Kenvue's words, to "high-performance formulas to support hair health and resilience from root to tip" [2]. Recent launches include a ProGrowth + Peptide thickening range that the brand says was developed with trichologists. According to Kenvue, OGX formulations exclude sulfated surfactants and parabens.

Editorial coverage has placed OGX in the drugstore tier, describing its products as budget-friendly formulas aimed at dry, damaged or colour-treated hair. The Argan Oil of Morocco shampoo, combining argan oil with silk proteins, has been among its most widely reviewed products.

Current status

OGX is an acquired brand: independently founded, it is now owned by Kenvue following the 2016 purchase of its parent company [2][3]. Despite the change in ownership, the brand remains commercially active, selling in the United States and dozens of international markets and continuing to launch new products. As of mid-2026 its ProGrowth + Peptide range was featured on the OGX website [1].
