Summary

Overview

Jovan is an American fragrance house built around musk, the brand that helped turn an inexpensive, oil-based scent into a mass-market category in the United States. It is best known for Jovan Musk, the men's and women's musk colognes that carried the name through the 1970s and beyond. The company has changed hands several times and today exists as a brand owned and manufactured by the cosmetics group Coty Inc., which acquired it in 1991 [3]. Coty continues to issue products under the name, most recently a 2024 musk collection, so Jovan is an active brand rather than a dormant one — but it operates as part of a larger portfolio rather than as an independent company.

Sources disagree on when Jovan began. A Women's Wear Daily obituary of co-founder Barry Shipp dates the company's founding to 1968 in Chicago [3], while Wikipedia and Coty's own materials treat 1972 — the year Jovan Musk reached the market — as the brand's heritage year [2][4]. The two dates describe different events: the founding of the company, and the launch of the product that made it.

Thinner sourcing. The article relies largely on the brand's own statements (T2–T3). Glowpedia is seeking independent sources.

Origin and founders

The brand's beginnings are usually traced to a piece of street-level observation. Barry Shipp, then a representative for Revlon, noticed young people in Greenwich Village in Manhattan buying musk oil and saw commercial promise in it; he took the oil to a perfume house to be developed into a finished fragrance. According to the Women's Wear Daily account, Shipp then joined with Chicago entrepreneur Bernard Mitchell to found Jovan in 1968, with Mitchell as chairman, Shipp as executive vice president, and Dick Myer as president, brought in for advertising and packaging expertise [3].

The founding credit is itself contested. Women's Wear Daily names Shipp and Mitchell as the founders [3], whereas Wikipedia lists Shipp alongside Murray Moscona, described as a co-founder who created the fragrance's first iteration [2] — a role that reads more like that of the formulator than a business partner. The discrepancy is unresolved in the available sources.

Products and positioning

Jovan's defining product is Jovan Musk, the scent the company developed from that original musk oil and released as a standalone fragrance for men and women. Women's Wear Daily called it "the locomotive for one of the most powerful fragrance categories in U.S. history" [3], and it became a recognisable part of 1970s popular culture. The line later widened to include variants such as Jovan White Musk and Jovan Musk Oil, sold under the Coty name at mass retailers including Walmart.

Commercially, Jovan was positioned at the accessible end of the market. Wikipedia notes that the products are commonly sold through drugstore and superstore chains, and Coty's current pricing places the line in the affordable, drugstore tier rather than as a prestige fragrance. The brand describes the original musk as "a blend of exotic spices and woods" meeting "the seductive power of musk".

History and milestones

By the end of the 1970s the fragrance house had grown into a substantial business, reportedly exceeding 85 million US dollars in sales. In 1981 Jovan signed an image-marketing tie-up with The Rolling Stones around the band's Tattoo You tour, cited as the first time a fragrance brand sponsored the group [2].

The ownership history that followed is more complicated than the brand's public face suggests. Jovan was sold to Beecham Products in 1979. A 1988 management buyout led by Shipp and Joseph Armando saw the company renamed Quintessence Inc., and in 1991 it was sold again — to Benckiser GmbH, which folded it into its Coty division [3]. That last transaction placed Jovan inside Coty, where it has remained.

Ownership

Jovan is owned and manufactured by Coty Inc., which acquired the brand through the 1991 Benckiser transaction [2][3]. Within Coty's consumer-beauty portfolio it sits alongside fragrance and cosmetics brands such as Rimmel, Bourjois, Max Factor, Sally Hansen, and licensed houses including Calvin Klein and BOSS. The standalone Jovan name has only a minimal independent web presence, and the brand is largely encountered through Coty's corporate channels and retailer listings.

Philosophy and positioning

Under Coty, Jovan has been repositioned as an inclusive, gender-free fragrance line. The company markets it with the line "JOVAN has been bringing people together since 1972" and frames the modern range around layerable, "mood-boosting" musks meant to be worn across ages and genders. Coty's Chief Brands Officer for Consumer Beauty, Stefano Curti, said the group's stated focus on "Undefining Beauty and embracing inclusivity aligns seamlessly with JOVAN's bold and expressive spirit" [4]. The brand presents itself, in Coty's words, as a "pioneer of musk fragrances during the 1970s" now aimed at a younger consumer.

Current status

Jovan is an active brand under Coty ownership rather than an independent company. Its most recent notable activity was a relaunch in September 2024, when Coty introduced a new gender-free Musk Eau de Parfum collection of three scents — Skin I'm In, Make Them Talk, and I Want You To Want Me — described by the company as the brand's first innovation since 2017 [4]. The fragrances draw on notes including jasmine, black currant, osmanthus, patchouli, pink pepper, rose, and cashmeran. The brand has no significant standalone website of its own and lives primarily within Coty's umbrella and at mass-market retailers.
