Summary

Overview

The Ordinary is a Canadian skincare brand co-launched in 2016 by Brandon Truaxe and Nicola Kilner in Toronto, under the parent company DECIEM [1]. Built around clearly named active ingredients sold at low prices, it became one of the breakout skincare names of the late 2010s [11]. The company positions itself against the industry's usual formulation complexity and premium pricing, arguing that, as its mission puts it, "skincare should be effective, honest, and accessible to everyone."

The Ordinary is now a wholly owned brand within The Estée Lauder Companies, which completed its acquisition of DECIEM in 2024 [7]. It remains commercially active worldwide, with a live multi-market storefront and ongoing product launches.

Origin & founders

The Ordinary was created as a product line of DECIEM, the Toronto company Truaxe styled "The Abnormal Beauty Company." Sources place the brand's launch in 2016: the brand's own about page records it as "Founded: 2016 by Brandon Truaxe in Toronto," and Wikipedia dates the co-launch, with Nicola Kilner, to August 2016 [6]. Some editorial accounts instead cite a 2015 launch. The dates for the brand should not be confused with those of its parent: DECIEM itself was founded earlier, in 2012 according to Wikipedia [6] or 2013 according to Estée Lauder's own press release [7].

According to the company, the founding idea was to "cut out the superfluous and create high-quality products" — stripping away marketing and ornamental ingredients in favour of researched actives, communicated plainly. That approach gave the range its distinctive naming convention, in which products are labelled by their active ingredient and concentration rather than by brand-speak.

History & milestones

The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) took an early interest in DECIEM, buying an initial minority stake of roughly 29% in 2017. In 2021 it moved to control, investing $1 billion for a 76% stake that valued DECIEM at $2.2 billion [8]. At the time, ELC highlighted The Ordinary for what it called "impressive community- and referral-driven buzz" in the growing skincare segment. ELC then exercised its option for the remainder, completing the full acquisition of DECIEM on 31 May 2024, for a total of roughly $1.7 billion across the three tranches [7].

Ownership

Ownership of The Ordinary can be described at two levels, and both appear in the sources. Its immediate parent is DECIEM Beauty Group Inc., the operating group named on the brand's own materials. The ultimate parent is The Estée Lauder Companies, which became DECIEM's full owner when the acquisition closed in 2024 [7]. Within ELC's portfolio, The Ordinary sits alongside brands such as Estée Lauder, Clinique, La Mer, M·A·C Cosmetics, Jo Malone London and Aveda. According to ELC, The Ordinary falls in its tier of scaling brands, each with net sales between $500 million and $1 billion.

Philosophy & positioning

The Ordinary presents itself as transparent, science-led and function-first. It groups its stated values around transparency, science, quality, simplicity and accessibility, summarised in the tagline "Clinical Formulations with Integrity." The company frames its aim as empowering customers "with transparent information about the science behind our products," and its ingredient pages stress being clear about what each formula contains and which concern it addresses. In business terms, the brand is associated with "functional beauty" and with a younger, value-conscious audience adopting multi-step routines [8].

Products & innovation

The Ordinary's range centres on skincare, with a body and hair line, organised on its site by concern, by routine step and by ingredient. Its formulations draw on a set of recurring hero ingredients including niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, retinol, vitamin C, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, caffeine and squalane.

The company places what it calls "science at the heart of everything we do," describing an in-house team of more than 150 scientists across cosmetic science, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology and toxicology [3]. It says each formula undergoes clinical testing "to prove the efficacy and safety of formulations" and draws on peer-reviewed literature and supplier data. On ethics, the parent group states that DECIEM products exclude parabens, sulphates, mineral oil, formaldehyde and mercury [6].

On sustainability, DECIEM is deliberately measured rather than sweeping. It states outright that it "is not a sustainable beauty company, as we don't have all the answers—yet," while describing work in five areas: responsible packaging, fighting climate change, better waste management, responsible sourcing and product lifecycle, and water conservation [4].

Recognition

In its 2024 acquisition announcement, ELC reported that The Ordinary ranked in the top two in prestige skincare in its home markets of Canada and the United States, and in the top four in France, Germany and the United Kingdom, during the quarter ended 31 March 2024 [7].

Controversies

The brand's early years were marked by a public crisis around its founder. During 2018 Truaxe exhibited erratic behaviour and, in October, ordered DECIEM's immediate closure, citing alleged "financial crimes" [6]. Estée Lauder, then holding about 28% of the company, sought legal action; Truaxe was removed as chief executive and replaced by Nicola Kilner, and a restraining order followed. Truaxe, born Ali Roshan, died on 20 January 2019 at the age of 40, reportedly after falling from his Toronto apartment [6]. The brand continued under Kilner's leadership and, later, full ELC ownership.

Current status

The Ordinary is an active brand operating as an acquired sub-brand of The Estée Lauder Companies rather than an independent company. It remains globally active, with continued product launches and a live storefront across multiple markets.
