Summary

Overview

Tom Ford is an American luxury house founded by the fashion designer Tom Ford in 2005, headquartered in New York City [3]. Ford had left his position as creative director at Gucci in 2004 and built the label across fashion, accessories, eyewear and beauty. The Estée Lauder Companies has been the sole owner of the brand since 2023 [4].

The beauty side of the house is the part most familiar to shoppers. It spans fragrance, makeup and skincare, and grew out of an early partnership with Estée Lauder that predates the full acquisition by well over a decade.

Origin and founders

Tom Ford launched his eponymous label in April 2005, the year after leaving the Gucci Group, initially pairing fragrance and eyewear with the Tom Ford Estée Lauder Collection of cosmetics [3]. According to the Estée Lauder Companies, the house was "founded in 2005 by Tom Ford" and is known for immaculate tailoring, modern sensuality and refined elegance.

The exact starting point depends on which arm is counted. The fashion house dates to 2005, but Tom Ford Beauty — the fragrance and cosmetics business run in partnership with Estée Lauder — launched in 2006, when the debut fragrance Black Orchid was released. The 2005 date is used here for the house itself; 2006 marks the beauty division's arrival.

History and milestones

The Private Blend fragrance collection followed in 2007, the same year the first directly owned Tom Ford boutique opened at 845 Madison Avenue in New York and the eyewear partnership with the Marcolin Group was announced. Ford added a women's ready-to-wear collection in 2010. He has described Private Blend as his "own personal scent laboratory," a place to create fragrances "unconstrained by the conventions of mainstream scent-making"; by 2021 the collection held twenty-three scents [5].

Ownership

The Estée Lauder Companies completed its acquisition of the Tom Ford brand on 28 April 2023 for an enterprise value of $2.8 billion, becoming sole owner of the brand and its intellectual property; Estée Lauder paid roughly $2.3 billion net of a $250 million payment from Marcolin at closing [4]. As part of the deal, the Zegna Group took control of the fashion business through a long-term license of at least twenty years, while Marcolin continued as the eyewear licensee. Estée Lauder's chief executive at the time, Fabrizio Freda, said the purchase would "unlock new opportunities and fortify our growth plans."

Within the Estée Lauder portfolio, Tom Ford sits alongside sister brands including La Mer, Jo Malone London, M·A·C Cosmetics, Bobbi Brown and Clinique.

Philosophy and positioning

The Estée Lauder Companies describes Tom Ford as a global luxury house offering women's and men's fashion, accessories, eyewear and beauty, present in more than 100 markets [1]. In fragrance, the house deliberately crosses gender lines: the Perfume Society records Ford's view that "men and women can wear any of his fragrances" [5]. Marie Claire places the beauty range in the aspirational luxury segment, aimed at buyers who prioritise quality over affordability [6].

Products and innovation

Black Orchid, released in November 2006, was the first fragrance sold under the Tom Ford Beauty banner and remains the brand's best-known scent. Harper's Bazaar described it as a "sensual and woody floral scent" [3]. Other signature fragrances include Oud Wood and Ombré Leather from the Private Blend line, and Lost Cherry. On the makeup side, the Shade & Illuminate collection — foundation, concealer, a contour duo and brushes — is a core offering [6].

Recognition

The Lost Cherry Eau de Parfum Spray won an Allure Best of Beauty Award in 2021 [3]. Women's Wear Daily named Rose Prick, a 2020 release inspired by Ford's private rose garden, one of that year's ten best fragrances. Several earlier scents, among them Violet Blonde and Grey Vetiver, received Fragrance Foundation Awards [5]. Marie Claire cites the Shade & Illuminate contour duo as a favourite of Hailey Bieber and Sabrina Carpenter [6].

Controversies

The label drew criticism from its start in 2005 for using naked women in advertising campaigns; Ford responded that he is "an equal opportunity objectifier" and "just as happy to objectify men" [3]. In 2014, a "Penis Pendant" necklace prompted objections from some Christians who found its shape close to a cross or crucifix; Ford clarified that it was intended as a phallus rather than a cross.

Current status

Tom Ford is an active global house. Since the 2023 acquisition it has been wholly owned by the Estée Lauder Companies, and in 2024 Haider Ackermann was appointed creative director, succeeding Peter Hawkings, with his first collection released in March 2025 [1].
