Summary

Overview

Dr. Barbara Sturm is a German skincare company founded in 2014 by the orthopedic doctor of the same name, with its legal entity, Barbara Sturm Molecular Cosmetics GmbH, based in Düsseldorf [1]. The brand grew out of medical research into anti-inflammatory protein therapy and built a prestige skincare range around it, becoming closely associated with celebrity clients and high price points. In January 2024 the Spanish group Puig acquired a majority stake; the founder retained a minority holding and stayed on as Chief Product Development Officer [2].

Origin & founders

Before there was a skincare line, there was a clinical method. Dr. Barbara Sturm earned her medical degree from Heinrich Heine University and joined a Düsseldorf orthopedic practice led by Peter Wehling, M.D., Ph.D., which worked on regenerative medicine using anti-inflammatory proteins drawn from a patient's own blood [3]. According to the company, that joint-disease work was the seed of everything that followed: the same principle of calming inflammation and supporting the body's own healing was redirected toward the skin.

In 2002 Sturm developed an in-clinic treatment she called MCX, a platelet-rich plasma facial later popularised as the "blood facial," and around the same time created MC1, a bespoke plasma-based cream made from a patient's own proteins and offered only to her clinic patients. She opened her own Düsseldorf clinic in 2006, where patients who used MC1 began asking what else they should put on their skin. That demand led, in 2014, to the launch of the full retail range, Molecular Cosmetics.

Ownership

Dr. Barbara Sturm is owned by Puig, the Spanish fashion-and-beauty conglomerate, which announced a majority-stake acquisition in January 2024 — the year of the brand's tenth anniversary [2]. Puig's portfolio includes Carolina Herrera, Rabanne, Penhaligon's, Charlotte Tilbury and Byredo, and the deal marked the group's first major move into prestige skincare, a category outside its fragrance-and-cosmetics base. The founder kept a minority stake and the Chief Product Development Officer role.

The size of the transaction was not made public by the two parties. Business of Fashion reported that Puig did not disclose the value of the deal, while Robb Report described it as "reportedly valued" at $400 million, citing later financial press [2][4]. The brand's 2023 retail sales were reported at $150 million. A year before the Puig deal, in April 2023, Oprah Winfrey had invested an undisclosed sum in the business [4].

Philosophy & positioning

The company positions itself around anti-inflammatory, science-led skincare rather than marketing claims. Sturm has framed the approach as a shift "exiting the era of marketing-based skincare and entering the era of performance-based skincare" [5]. In keeping with that stance, the brand explicitly rejects the labels "clean," "natural" and "organic," arguing they have no consistent definition and say nothing about a product's safety or efficacy [6].

On formulation, Dr. Barbara Sturm states that it is cruelty-free, does not test finished products or ingredients on animals, and will not sell where animal testing is required by law [6]. The company says its products are formulated without parabens, with the single exception of its SUN DROPS SPF 50, where a low concentration is used as a preservative. The range sits at the luxury price tier and is sold through several channels — the brand's own website, spas in six cities, and department-store retailers including Saks Fifth Avenue and Selfridges [4].

Products & innovation

The retail collection is built on the same molecular, anti-inflammatory premise as the original clinic work. A recurring hero ingredient is purslane, which the company describes as a "fountain-of-youth" active that helps activate the enzyme telomerase in skin cells [7]. Hyaluronic acid, in both short and long chains, and plasma-derived proteins also feature across the line.

The Hyaluronic Serum, launched with the inaugural 2014 range, is the brand's best-seller and its most recognised product [8]. The bespoke MC1 cream remains central to the brand's clinical origin story, and the MCX or "blood facial" treatment is widely credited as Sturm's signature contribution to celebrity skincare. Other frequently cited products include the Super Anti-Aging Serum, Hyaluronic Ampoules and Glow Drops. By later accounts the line had expanded to roughly 300 products across multiple ranges [4].

Recognition

The brand's profile has been closely tied to celebrity use. Editorial coverage has named Kim Kardashian — credited with helping popularise the vampire facial — alongside Gwyneth Paltrow, Hailey Bieber, Paris Hilton, Emma Roberts and Jennifer Garner among its users [9]. Dr. Sturm and the company have been profiled by Time (2018), Robb Report and Business of Fashion (2024), and the South China Morning Post (2025), the last noting Paltrow and Winfrey among the brand's supporters.

Current status

Dr. Barbara Sturm remains an active, operating brand under Puig ownership following the 2024 acquisition. Its founder continues in product development, and distribution spans the United States, Europe and Asia through direct-to-consumer sales, department stores and spas. Recent press coverage published through 2025 indicates the business continues to trade internationally.
