Overview
Elancyl is a French body-care brand specialising in anti-cellulite and firming products, founded in 1971 by the pharmacist Pierre Fabre [7]. Built around a specific massage method paired with botanical actives, it became one of the longstanding names in the French pharmacy-skincare segment and is sold through pharmacies in more than twenty European countries [6]. The brand remains active and, since November 2020, has been owned by the Spanish pharmaceutical group Cantabria Labs [6].
The company trades under the name Laboratoire Elancyl and uses the long-running tagline "Expert minceur depuis 1971" ("slimming expert since 1971"). Its products are positioned at the pharmacy price tier and centre almost entirely on the body: anti-cellulite and firming creams, massage oils and gels, scrubs, shower gels, dietary supplements and massage accessories.
Origin and founders
Elancyl was created in 1971 by Pierre Fabre, the same pharmacist who built the wider Pierre Fabre group [7]. According to the founder's company, the slimming method was "created and launched by Pierre Fabre himself," and the brand introduced what it describes as the first anti-cellulite massage technique using an extract of ivy. From the outset the method rested on three pillars the company still cites today: repetition, consistency and massage.
History and milestones
The brand frames its history as a sequence of formulation "firsts," most of them claimed by the company itself. In 1978 it introduced caffeine into an anti-cellulite product, which Elancyl states made it the first brand to do so. Later milestones include a 1987 treatment using micro-particles to act on fat and surrounding tissue, and a 2010 product the company describes as offering triple anti-cellulite action. In 2016 it launched a treatment aimed at the three factors it associates with cellulite, and in 2017 it released the Slim Massage, which the brand records as its first patented slimming massage device. In 2020 it added a care product based on the microalga Tisochrysis Lutea.
Ownership
For its first 45 years Elancyl belonged to the Pierre Fabre group, which had founded it [5]. In 2020 Pierre Fabre divested the brand to Cantabria Labs, a Spanish pharmaceutical group, in a deal effective 1 November 2020; the purchase price was not disclosed [6]. Pierre Fabre's chief executive, Eric Ducournau, framed the sale as consistent with a strategy of concentrating on "brands relying on dermatologist recommendations and targeting pathologic skins, which is not the case of Elancyl" [6]. At the time of sale the brand reported sales of 9.8 million euros for 2019 and held leading positions in France, Spain, Greece, Portugal and Poland [5].
Some brand-adjacent material still associates Elancyl with the Pierre Fabre group, reflecting its long history there [2]. Multiple trade reports confirm that current ownership rests with Cantabria Labs, and Elancyl's own legal notices list the brand as distributed by Laboratoire Dermatologique ACM, a Cantabria Labs subsidiary [4][6]. Within the Cantabria Labs portfolio it sits alongside brands such as Heliocare, Endocare, ACM, Biretix and Neoretin.
Philosophy and positioning
Elancyl presents itself as a wellness brand rather than a purely slimming one. Its method pages argue that caring for the body should be self-care taken at one's own pace, summarised in the line "it's not just about slimness, it's above all about well-being." The stated mission is to help women "accept themselves and feel good in their body at each stage of their life," and the brand says it does not seek to "freeze the body in an ideal" but to accompany it through phases such as puberty, the menstrual cycle, postpartum and menopause. The company organises its positioning around three values: medical science, a "360°" approach combining lifestyle with daily skincare, and what it calls sensoriality, an emphasis on texture and pleasure of use.
Products and innovation
The brand's signature lines include Slim Design, the MY COACH! programme and the Slim Massage accessory. Its formulations draw on botanical and marine actives, with hero ingredients including ivy, caffeine, a proprietary "3D Caffeine Complex," guarana, camelina and safflower oils, and the Tisochrysis Lutea microalga. The brand describes that microalga as one that mimics the metabolism of athletes to increase fat-burning efficacy, a claim it presents as the basis of its 2020 reformulation. Its main patented innovation on record is the 2017 Slim Massage device.
Current status
Elancyl is an active brand. It operates an e-commerce site at elancyl.fr, run on the Shopify platform with a current product catalogue and an ambassador programme, and is distributed by Laboratoire Dermatologique ACM under Cantabria Labs ownership [4]. The company is registered in Clichy, France, and continues to market its range across more than twenty European countries.
