Summary

Overview

Ibero is a Finnish accessories and beauty brand based in Espoo, founded in 1951 [1]. It began as a fashion-jewelry venture and has since broadened into hair accessories, beauty tools, children's products, and reading and sunglasses. Since 1 July 2016 it has operated as a subsidiary of the Finnish family company Transmeri Oy (Oy Transmeri Ab) [7].

The brand positions itself around affordable, everyday self-expression, summed up in its tagline "feeling good is the best accessory." Its beauty range is built chiefly around tools and accessories rather than colour cosmetics or nail polish.

Origin and founders

The company traces its start to 1951, when Olavi A. Rautio, described by the brand as "Ibero's father," became taken with local jewelry while studying in Spain and decided to bring fashion-jewelry culture back to Finland in his suitcase [1]. That Spanish inspiration is reflected in the name itself. From the original jewelry line, the range gradually expanded to include beauty-care products, hair accessories, children's items, and reading and sunglasses, while the company says its founding principles stayed the same.

History and milestones

Ibero has, by its own account, operated for more than 70 years, passing its seventieth anniversary in 2021. Carner, the M&A advisor that handled the 2016 sale, describes it as "a family company, founded in 1951, that specializes in designing, importing and marketing of fashion jewelry, sun glasses and beauty products" [7].

Ownership

On 1 July 2016, Oy Transmeri Ab acquired 100 percent of Ibero's shares, and the company became a Transmeri subsidiary on that date [7]. Transmeri is a long-established Finnish family company headquartered in Espoo; at the time of the acquisition it reported over 500 employees and consolidated revenue of 172.5 million euros for 2015. Ibero sits within Transmeri's beauty accessories and products portfolio [6].

Philosophy and positioning

According to the company, Ibero exists so that everyone can adorn everyday life "with quality and at a wallet-friendly price." It frames the feeling that accessories and beauty create as more important than a flawless result: the brand argues that the beauty world is full of a pursuit of perfection that only creates needless pressure, and it encourages people not to feel they must be immaculate. That outlook is captured in its stated belief that "feeling good is the best accessory" [1]. The brand's everyday, low-cost positioning places it at the drugstore end of the market.

Products and innovation

Alongside its fashion jewelry, Ibero's beauty assortment centres on application and skincare tools. It includes makeup brushes and makeup sponges, facial cupping sets, gua sha tools, and jade and rose quartz rollers, as well as home-manicure supplies [5]. The brand frames these as helpers for "various makeup experiments," skincare routines, and at-home manicures. The wider catalog also spans hair accessories such as brushes, combs, pins and scrunchies, children's products, and reading and sunglasses.

Sustainability

Ibero describes a sustainability approach focused on materials, packaging, and supply chain. The company says it increasingly favors durable and renewable raw materials, citing products made from fast-growing bamboo and from recycled and more readily recyclable materials, and it aims to keep packaging quantities moderate [2]. On ethics, the brand states that it does not use real fur and that its brush hair is synthetic. It says all of its products meet Finnish and EU safety and materials requirements, including REACH.

The company reports that production currently takes place in Asia, naming China and South Korea, and in Europe, naming Italy and Poland, while the reflectors in its range are made entirely in Finland. It says it selects only manufacturing partners audited under amfori BSCI or another internationally recognised auditing system, favors low-emission transport with goods shipped from Asia mainly by sea, and operates an ISO 14001-certified logistics centre in Vantaa [2].

Current status

Ibero is an active brand operating under Transmeri Oy, with a live e-commerce site and a current product range. Its largest customers have been Finnish retailing groups and specialty stores, and it has historically exported to Russia and the Baltics [7]; Transmeri reports a market presence across Finland, Sweden and the Baltic region [6].
