Overview
MOSSA is a certified-organic skincare brand built around extracts from Nordic and Baltic berries. It was launched in 2014 by the Latvian company AS Madara Cosmetics as a separate, more affordable range aimed at mass-retail channels [6]. Although the brand presents itself as "Nordic", its origin is Latvian; an editorial review describes it plainly as "a Latvian brand" [8]. Since 2024 it has been owned by the Finnish company Oy Transmeri Ab and is operated from Espoo, Finland [4].
The brand remains active, with a live online store and current product ranges covering face, body and hair care alongside an SPF line. Its positioning rests on natural formulation, organic certification and the antioxidant properties the company attributes to wild berries.
Origin and naming
MOSSA was created within Madara Cosmetics, a Latvian natural-cosmetics company founded in 2006 and headquartered in Marupe, near Riga. Madara introduced MOSSA as a distinct organic line rather than a flagship product, positioning it in the middle of the price range and giving it a separate distribution strategy designed for mass-retail outlets [7]. No individual founder is named for the MOSSA sub-brand itself.
The name's meaning is reported differently across sources. The retailer Ecco Verde states that "'Mossa' translates to 'moss'", linking it to the moss-covered Nordic landscapes where the brand's berries grow [9]. A separate search summary attributed to Wikipedia instead glossed the word as Latvian for "berry"; that reading was not confirmed on a fetched page. The "moss" explanation aligns with the company's own nature-led framing and is the more directly sourced of the two.
Ownership
In April 2024, Madara Cosmetics sold MOSSA to Oy Transmeri Ab of Finland for 4 million euros, with the transaction closing on 30 April [7]. According to the regulatory disclosure, MOSSA had accounted for roughly a 10% share of Madara's turnover since its 2014 launch, and the sale was framed as a way to redirect resources toward the company's flagship MÁDARA brand [6].
The deal was a related-party transaction: Transmeri already held a 22.89% stake in Madara Cosmetics at the time of the purchase [6]. Madara, a publicly traded company listed on the Nasdaq First North market, stated that the sale would support MOSSA's growth in the Finnish market while increasing its own contract-manufacturing volumes. Transmeri continues to operate the brand from Espoo, Finland [4].
Philosophy and positioning
MOSSA frames itself around "pure Nordic berry energy" and what it calls simple, nature-powered and ethical beauty. The company summarises its approach with the words "Safe · Sustainable · Natural", and uses the tagline "Nordic Berry Energy" [4]. Its stated formulation choices include natural preservatives, fragrances derived from essential oils and pure mineral colorants.
Commercially, the range targets everyday skincare for all skin types and is split by age group, with separate lines for younger (roughly 25–40) and mature (40+) skin. An independent review noted this age-based structure and suggested mature, anti-ageing skin as the brand's primary market.
Products and ingredients
The hero ingredients are extracts from wild and garden berries, among them raspberry, blueberry, blackberry, blackcurrant, sea buckthorn and lingonberry. The company also lists cloudberry, cranberry, quince and lingonberry across its range, describing each by a particular benefit — cloudberry, for example, is credited with a high concentration of vitamin C, and sea buckthorn with rare omega-7 fatty acids. Product families on the brand's store include lines such as Derma+, Glow cocktail, V-Lift, Vitamin moisture and Youth defence, spanning face care, body care, hair care and SPF.
On certification and ethics, MOSSA states that its ingredients, final formulations and packaging are certified to ECOCERT or COSMOS standards, that its formulations are suitable for vegans, and that its products are dermatologically tested and not tested on animals. The company also says it uses recyclable packaging and that more than half of the electricity used in manufacturing comes from renewable sources. Manufacturing remains based in Latvia.
Current status
MOSSA is active. Following the 2024 acquisition it is marketed and sold by Transmeri, with a live e-commerce presence and current product ranges across face, body, hair and sun care [4]. Ownership has moved from Latvia to Finland, but the brand itself continues to operate across Nordic and Baltic markets.
