Summary

Overview

Lemon Juice & Glycerine, often shortened to LJG, is a Finnish skincare brand founded in 1952 and best known for a glycerin-rich, lemon-scented hand cream [1]. It is owned by the Finnish family company Oy Transmeri Ab and made in Vantaa, just outside Helsinki [2]. The brand remains active: in 2022 it marked its 70th anniversary, and in early 2023 it expanded beyond hand and foot care into a wider body-care range [3].

Despite its English name, the brand is and always has been domestically produced. That contrast — a foreign-sounding label on a thoroughly Finnish product — is central to its origin story and to how it has positioned itself ever since.

Origin

The brand was established in 1952, the year Helsinki hosted the Summer Olympics [1]. According to the company, Finnish consumers of the era tended to regard imported goods as higher in quality, a sentiment shaped by wartime rationing and material shortages. To fit that preference, the new hand cream was given a deliberately foreign-sounding English name even though it was manufactured entirely in Finland, a choice the company sums up in its slogan "Kotimaista pehmeyttä jo vuodesta 1952" — domestic softness since 1952.

The original product was a hand cream sold in aluminium tubes inside cardboard boxes, and for its first years it was available only through pharmacies. The brand's own history records that the cream went on to find a broad audience across social classes, used, as it puts it, by both upper-class ladies and working-class mothers. The names of the founders are not recorded.

Ownership

Lemon Juice & Glycerine is operated by Oy Transmeri Ab, a Finnish family-owned company founded in 1928 that develops, imports and markets everyday consumer goods and cosmetics in Finland and the Baltic region [4]. The brand sits within Transmeri's portfolio of house brands alongside Ibero and Biozell [4]. Its registered headquarters are in Espoo, while production takes place in the Piispankylä district of Vantaa [2].

Philosophy & positioning

The company frames the brand around three ideas it expresses in Finnish as kotimaisuus, perinteet and vaivaton ihonhoito — domesticity, tradition and effortless skincare. Lemon Juice & Glycerine describes its products as offering gentle, dependable care for the skin day after day, and presents itself as a long-established, accessible Finnish classic rather than a premium or trend-driven line. Glycerin, a common humectant that draws moisture to the skin, and a signature lemon scent run through the entire range.

Products

The brand's defining product is its traditional hand cream (Perinteinen käsivoide), the line that dates back to 1952; the company states it contains 34 percent glycerin and is aimed at dry and very dry hands. Around it sits a broader hand-care range, including ultra-nourishing, intensive and lighter formulas built on glycerin together with ingredients such as shea butter, betaine, panthenol, vitamin E and keratin.

Foot care forms a second pillar, led by a heel cream the company says combines 18 percent urea, which softens hardened skin, with moisturising glycerin. The range also includes lemon-scented liquid soaps — sold with a refill pouch the company markets as using 80 percent less plastic — and, from 2023, an expanded body-care line of body lotions and scrubs in a lemon-mango variant [3].

Sustainability

All Lemon Juice & Glycerine products are vegan, according to the company, and its rinse-off soaps use biodegradable formulations. The brand carries Finland's Avainlippu (Key Flag) mark, awarded to products made with Finnish work, and says its manufacturing runs on 100 percent fossil-free electricity with recovered-heat systems. The company also reports that its production is certified to the ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and ISO 22716 standards and that it takes part in the Finnish chemical industry's Responsible Care programme [1]. Packaging is described as recyclable.

Recognition

As a Finnish heritage drugstore brand, Lemon Juice & Glycerine has limited independent press coverage. Its 70th-anniversary milestone and 2023 body-care expansion were announced through a 2022 press release that quoted Transmeri brand manager Eva Hopia, who said the company wanted to "keep the iconic lemon" scent across every product in the new line [3]. A Finnish beauty blog reviewed the brand's body lotions as early as 2014 [5].

Current status

The brand is active. It is sold primarily in Finland through grocery chains such as K-Ruoka and, historically, pharmacies, with limited availability abroad through Finland-themed export retailers [6]. Its most recent documented activity is the 2023 body-care launch [3].
