Overview
IT Cosmetics is an American prestige beauty brand founded in 2008 and built around makeup formulated to address common skin concerns. The name stands for "Innovative Technology," and the company describes its products as "makeup that starts its life as skincare." Since 2016 it has been owned by the French group L'Oréal, which acquired it for 1.2 billion US dollars and placed it within its Luxe Division [2][3].
The brand grew from a single problem its founder wanted to solve into a multi-product line sold through television shopping, beauty retailers and its own website. Its best-known item, the Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream with SPF 50, became one of the most widely sold products in its category in the United States [6].

Origin and founders
IT Cosmetics began with Jamie Kern Lima, a former television news anchor who lived with hereditary rosacea and hyperpigmentation and was dissatisfied with the cosmetics available to cover them. According to L'Oréal's account of the company, she set out to create her own product line, working with dermatologists and clinical scientists who specialised in inflammatory skin diseases, and launched the brand in 2008 [4].
Sources differ on how to describe the founding team. L'Oréal's corporate and investor-relations materials name both Jamie Kern Lima and her husband, Paulo Lima, as founders [2]. Wikipedia's article on Jamie Kern Lima identifies her as the co-founder and describes Paulo Lima as her spouse [5]. Both accounts agree that Paulo Lima supported and worked alongside her from the start, and that Jamie Kern Lima served as the company's public face and chief executive.
The early business grew out of a California apartment before relocating; by the time of its sale, the company's headquarters were recorded as Jersey City, New Jersey [3].
History and milestones
A turning point came through the television shopping channel QVC. In one segment, Kern Lima removed her makeup on air to demonstrate the brand's concealer; according to Wikipedia, the featured products sold out by the end of the broadcast. She went on to appear in more than 1,000 live QVC shows, and IT Cosmetics became the largest beauty brand on the channel's network [5]. By 2015 the company reported more than 182 million US dollars in net sales [5].
In 2012 the company began donating profits to Look Good Feel Better, a program supporting women undergoing cancer treatment [4].
In July 2016, L'Oréal agreed to acquire IT Cosmetics for 1.2 billion US dollars; the agreement was signed on 22 July and the deal closed on 31 August 2016 [2][3]. On joining L'Oréal, Kern Lima became the first female chief executive officer of a L'Oréal brand, and she remained with the company until announcing her departure in 2019 [5].
Ownership
IT Cosmetics is part of L'Oréal's Luxe Division, the group's prestige arm. Its sister brands within L'Oréal's wider portfolio include Lancôme, Kiehl's, Helena Rubinstein, Carita and Creed, alongside mass-market labels such as L'Oréal Paris, Maybelline and Garnier. The 2016 purchase was an outright acquisition rather than a partial stake.
Philosophy and positioning
The company positions IT Cosmetics as "the original hybrid makeup brand," with the stated view that "solving skin concerns is at the core of everything we do." Its products are developed, in the brand's words, with dermatologists and plastic surgeons and "approved by makeup experts." The mission, as stated by the company, is that customers "should feel powerful and sure of [their] real beauty," summarised in the tagline "Your Skin But Better."
Products and innovation
The line spans makeup and skincare, with several products central to its identity. The Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream with SPF 50 combines full coverage with a physical SPF 50 sunscreen and ingredients including hyaluronic acid and collagen, which the brand says help firm and hydrate the complexion. Confidence in a Cream is an anti-ageing hydrating moisturiser; L'Oréal states that one is sold every two minutes in the United States. The brand's makeup brushes are also a notable part of the range. On its own pages the company describes the CC+ Cream as the "#1 SPF foundation in the US" and the brushes as the "#1 brush brand in the US."
Recognition
The Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream drew sustained editorial attention. Who What Wear described it as having "cult status" and reported that it became the "#1 best-selling CC cream in America," noting its appeal to customers managing concerns such as acne and rosacea [6]. The brand's founder was listed in WWD's "Beauty's 50 Most Powerful Women" in 2015 [4].
Current status
IT Cosmetics remains an active brand operating under L'Oréal's ownership following the 2016 acquisition, sold through retailers including QVC, Ulta and Sephora as well as its own website. It is described here as acquired rather than independent because ownership and control sit with its parent company, L'Oréal; the brand itself continues in distribution.
