Overview
Shakira, marketed as Shakira Perfumes, is a Spanish fragrance line developed by the beauty and fashion company Puig in partnership with the Colombian singer Shakira (Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll). Based in Barcelona and formerly known as Shakira Beauty, the line pairs Puig's manufacturing and distribution with the artist's public identity, and it sells across more than a dozen markets in Latin America, Spain, the United States and India.
The line's founding date is recorded two ways. Puig and Shakira signed their licensing agreement in 2008 [7], while the first fragrance, S by Shakira, reached the market in 2010 [2]. Sources differ on which date marks the brand's beginning: Wikipedia dates the perfume line to 2008 [6], and the company treats the 2010 product launch as the starting point [2]. The line remains active, with new releases continuing into the 2020s.
Origin and founders
In 2008 Puig announced a partnership with Shakira and signed an agreement, in the company's words, "to develop a line of signature products produced with and inspired by the artist" [7]. Development ran about three years, during which the singer's involvement was described as "extremely hands-on." The first fragrance was presented at a press event in Madrid in June 2010 and reached retail that September.
The eponymous partner is the singer Shakira, and the brand frames her as a creative collaborator rather than a licensed endorser. On its site the company quotes her directly: "I'm not interested in being just a name on the bottle: I want my perfumes to be an expression of who I really am."
History and milestones
After S by Shakira, the line expanded steadily through the 2010s. Variants of the debut scent followed, including S by Shakira Eau Florale in 2011, developed with the perfumer Elisabeth Vidal, and an ocean-inspired Aquamarine edition in 2013. The Elixir collection arrived in 2012, and Rock! followed in 2014 with a bottle shaped like an electric guitar, presented as a nod to the singer's "daring side" [6].
The Dance collection launched in 2016, its bottle designed to evoke movement, and it later became one of the line's bestselling pillars. Dream followed in 2018 alongside a biographical web series. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Puig redirected production capacity for the brand toward hand sanitizer [6]. The line marked its tenth anniversary in 2021.
A newer chapter began in 2023 with the SHK Collection, led by Rojo, followed by Fucsia in 2024. According to Wikipedia, the line has released roughly 50 fragrances in total [6].
Ownership
The line is owned by Puig, the Barcelona-based fashion and beauty company founded in 1914 by Antonio Puig Castelló and still led by the founding family [5]. Puig holds and licenses a broad portfolio of fragrance and beauty houses, among them Penhaligon's, L'Artisan Parfumeur, Nina Ricci, Carolina Herrera, Rabanne and Jean Paul Gaultier, with Shakira listed as one of its fragrance lines [5].
Puig reported revenue of 4,790 million euros for 2024 and listed on the Madrid Stock Exchange the same year, with the founding family retaining majority voting control after the offering [5].
Philosophy and positioning
The line centres on the singer's public persona, which the company summarises as "bold femininity, creative energy and empowerment," and it positions its scents as expressions of the different facets of modern women. The SHK Collection, the company says, "speaks to the many facets of modern women, inspired by the artist herself" and encourages women to "embrace all of their many facets." The homepage carries the tagline "Women don't cry, women shine."
Commercially the line sits in the mass-market segment. It is distributed widely, described as available in more than 15,000 stores, with localised e-commerce for markets including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Spain, the United States and India.
Products and innovation
The debut and defining product is S by Shakira, an oriental floral eau de toilette that the company still lists among its classics [2]. Its composition moves from citrus, peach and passion fruit at the top through a heart of gardenia and sambac jasmine to a base of sandalwood, vanilla, amber and musk. Later pillars include the Dance line, whose Dance Midnight is labelled a bestseller on the official site, and the SHK Collection's Rojo and Fucsia, the latter an eau de parfum built on notes of mandarin, jasmine, tuberose and a gourmand base of vanilla and raspberry. Bottle design is a recurring signature, from the guitar shape of Rock! to the ruby-shaped flacon of the SHK Collection. The line's fragrances have been composed by perfumers including Marion Costero, Sonia Constant, Olivier Cresp, Fanny Bal, Sophie Labbé and Elisabeth Vidal [6].
Recognition
S by Shakira won the Academia del Perfume award for Best Women's Fragrance in the "Great Distribution" category in 2010, and it received a 2011 FiFi Awards nomination in the "Women's Broad Appeal" category [7]. At launch, Style.com described the scent as "sexy, sensual, and a whole host of other words beginning with 'S'."
Current status
The line is active. Its most recent activity includes the 2024 release of Fucsia and, on the current site, new Rojo Elixir and Fucsia Elixir editions, alongside continued distribution across multiple regions under Puig's ownership.
