Overview
Uriage, formally Laboratoires Dermatologiques d'Uriage, is a French dermo-cosmetic skincare brand built around the Uriage thermal spring water of the French Alps. Its laboratories were created in 1992 to develop skincare that uses the thermal water as a core ingredient [7], and the brand has since become one of the more frequently pharmacist- and dermatologist-recommended skincare lines in France. It is sold through pharmacies and parapharmacies in France and in more than 80 countries.
Since 2011 Uriage has been owned by the Spanish group Puig, which acquired the company to strengthen its position in premium skincare [6]. The brand continues to operate as a distinct, active line under Puig, with a live catalogue and current product ranges.
Origin
Uriage centres on a thermal spring in the French Alps, at an altitude of 1,600 metres, where the water emerges at 27°C. The company describes it as an isotonic water, meaning its mineral concentration is close to that of the body's own fluids, so that it acts "in osmosis with the skin's cells." It carries roughly 11 grams of minerals per litre, including sulfates, chloride, sodium, calcium and magnesium, along with trace elements such as zinc, copper and iron.
The modern brand is a much later entity than the spring itself, whose use in the area long predates it. Laboratoires Dermatologiques d'Uriage were established in 1992 to formulate dermo-cosmetic products around this water [7]. Sources differ slightly on the exact year: while multiple editorial and business databases state 1992 [7], trade coverage of the 2011 acquisition described "the past 18 years" of growth, which would imply a start closer to 1993 [6]. The brand's own reference to water having "flowed for 75 years" describes the spring's exploitation rather than the company's founding.
Ownership
On 29 June 2011, the Puig Group acquired Uriage, working through the holding companies Corporacion Exea Empresarial and Invest M3 [6]. At the time, trade press reported the laboratory's 2010 net sales as exceeding 70 million euros and described it as a French dermo-cosmetics laboratory with "good notoriety, both in France and abroad" [6]. Puig, a family-controlled Spanish group, sits over a portfolio that also includes fragrance and beauty houses such as Rabanne, Carolina Herrera, Jean Paul Gaultier, Nina Ricci, Penhaligon's, L'Artisan Parfumeur, Apivita and ISDIN. Uriage manufactures its products at what the company calls the "Uriage or Puig factory."
Philosophy & positioning
Uriage positions itself around high-tolerance skincare formulated with its soothing thermal water, aimed at sensitive and condition-prone skin. In French, its slogan renders the brand as "the most cosmetic of dermatological brands," and its English tagline is "from the spring to skincare." French-pharmacy editorial characterises it as a "French Pharmacy" brand focused on sensitive-skin expertise and problem-solving products for common skin conditions [7].
The company frames a set of commitments around tolerance and transparency: it describes its products as hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic, formulated with a reduced number of selected preservatives, and it points to ingredient-list transparency and a cosmetovigilance service that monitors product safety after sale. Uriage also operates a thermal centre and spa at the source, which it describes as specialising in inflammatory and itch-related skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and atopy.
Products & innovation
The thermal water is the brand's central proprietary asset, marketed both on its own and as the base of the wider range. Uriage cites clinical figures for it, including a claim of "+32% of hydration in just 1 hour, lasting for 8 hours," and states that the water helps restore the skin's barrier and modulate its immune response. Signature products include the Eau Thermale repairing water spray, the Bariéderm-Cica repairing cream formulated with copper and zinc, the Xémose lipid-replenishing anti-irritation cream for dry and atopic skin, the Eau Thermale Water Cream, and the Roséliane anti-redness cream. Its ranges span face, body, baby and sun care.
Recognition
Current status
Uriage is an active brand operating under Puig ownership since its 2011 acquisition [6]. It maintains a live website and current product lines, and is distributed through pharmacies and parapharmacies in France and more than 80 countries. It has not been folded into another line; it continues as a standalone dermo-cosmetic brand within the Puig group.
