Summary

Overview

Regaine is a hair-regrowth brand built on minoxidil, a drug first developed to lower blood pressure. It is the name used in the UK, Europe, Australia and Canada for the product sold in the United States as Rogaine; according to its owner, the formulation and active ingredient are the same under both names [10]. The brand traces its start to August 1988, when the US Food and Drug Administration approved topical minoxidil for male baldness [9]. Today it belongs to Kenvue, whose portfolio also includes Neutrogena, Aveeno and Johnson's.

Unlike most products in the hair-care aisle, Regaine is a licensed medicine rather than a cosmetic. Its German range of foams and solutions for men and women is registered as a non-prescription pharmacy medicine for hereditary hair loss, the common pattern thinning that doctors call androgenetic alopecia. The brand remains active, with new products added to the US line as recently as 2026.

Origin & founders

Regaine has no founder in the usual sense. It grew out of a pharmaceutical discovery made inside a drug company, The Upjohn Company, rather than from an entrepreneur's idea.

Minoxidil was discovered in 1963 and introduced as a treatment for high blood pressure in 1971, sold in tablet form under names such as Loniten. In the same year, researchers noticed something unexpected: patients taking it were growing hair. The finding led to the drug being reworked as a lotion applied directly to the scalp. Rogaine's own account places the moment of discovery in the 1980s and describes it as a chance finding, made while scientists were studying minoxidil for other uses.

The route to market involved a legal dispute over who owned the idea. A consolidated US patent covering minoxidil for hair loss, naming Charles A. Chidsey III and Guinter Kahn, was issued in 1986 and ended a disagreement between Kahn and Upjohn [9]. The patent covered the medical use of the compound rather than any branded technology.

The brand name itself had a false start. Upjohn's first choice was "Regain", but the FDA rejected it as misleading and the product was approved in August 1988 as Rogaine [9]. The rejected spelling survives, in slightly altered form, as Regaine, the name the brand carries outside the United States.

History & milestones

The US timeline published by the brand charts a steady widening of the range. In 1988, Rogaine 2% Minoxidil Solution for Men went on sale as a prescription-only treatment. A version for women followed, which the company dates to 1992 [11]; Wikipedia gives 1991 as the year Upjohn made the product available for women [9]. The gap may reflect the difference between an approval date and a launch date, but neither source explains it.

In 1996 the solutions moved from prescription to over-the-counter sale in drugstores, a change that made them far easier to buy. A stronger 5% solution for men followed in 1997.

Johnson & Johnson acquired the brand in 2006 [11] and went on to develop a 5% minoxidil foam for men. Foam is easier to spread over larger areas and less likely to drip than a liquid, according to the brand. An unscented version of the men's foam was approved in 2011. In 2014 came a once-daily, unscented 5% foam for women, which the brand describes as the first and only such product approved by the FDA.

For more than three decades every product under the name contained minoxidil. That changed in 2024, when the US line added a Men's Thickening 2 in 1 Shampoo + Conditioner, designed to be used alongside regrowth treatments; it has since been listed as discontinued. In 2026 two further shampoos joined the US range: a Pre-Growth Shampoo + Conditioner and a 2% Salicylic Acid Anti-Dandruff Shampoo + Conditioner.

These milestones describe the American Rogaine line. The German Regaine range is narrower and consists only of minoxidil medicines. When the Regaine name was first introduced in Europe is not documented.

Ownership

Regaine has passed through several corporate hands. It began at Upjohn, was acquired by Johnson & Johnson in 2006, and is now owned by Kenvue Inc. In Germany the brand's website is published by Kenvue Germany GmbH, based in Neuss [7].

Traces of the earlier owner remain. One frequently-asked-questions page on the German site still describes the brand's medical adviser, Dr. Kerstin Neumann, as working for Johnson & Johnson [6], while the site's legal notice and its ingredient page name Kenvue.

Within Kenvue, Regaine sits alongside skin, body and hair brands including Neutrogena, Aveeno, Johnson's, Piz Buin, Clean & Clear, Le Petit Marseillais, NeoStrata, Exuviance, OGX and Maui Moisture.

Philosophy & positioning

Regaine positions itself as a medicine first. Its German website opens with the line "Erblich bedingten Haarausfall stoppen mit Regaine® – klinisch belegt", which translates as "Stop hereditary hair loss with Regaine – clinically proven" [1].

The site's argument is built around a contrast. According to the company, many products sold for thinning hair, from special shampoos to hair tonics and supplements, do nothing against hereditary hair loss, while minoxidil has been shown to work. It frames the problem as widespread, stating that up to 60–80% of men and up to 42% of women are affected at some point in their lives.

The brand's explanation of how the drug works is straightforward. In hereditary hair loss, it says, the blood vessels that feed the hair roots shrink back, the follicles waste away and the growing phase of each hair shortens. Applied to the scalp, minoxidil widens those vessels, improves the supply of blood and nutrients, and so strengthens existing hair and encourages new growth. Wikipedia describes the same effect in pharmacological terms: minoxidil is converted in the body into minoxidil sulfate, which opens potassium channels and widens blood vessels.

Owner Kenvue goes further in its own marketing, describing Rogaine as the number-one dermatologist-recommended brand for hair regrowth. That is the company's claim rather than an independent ranking.

Products & innovation

Regaine's German range has four products, split by sex and by format:

- Regaine Männer Schaum – a 5% minoxidil foam, approved exclusively for men. - Regaine Männer Lösung – a liquid solution for men. - Regaine Frauen Schaum – a 5% minoxidil foam for women, used once a day. - Regaine Frauen Lösung – a 2% minoxidil solution for women, used twice a day.

The brand explains the difference in strength by saying women respond to smaller amounts of the drug, while men need 5% applied twice daily. The products are licensed for specific groups: the men's solution for men aged 18 to 49 with thinning at the crown of the head between 3 and 10 cm across, and the men's foam for men aged 21 to 49. The solutions contain propylene glycol.

There is one inconsistency on the brand's own website. Its FAQ states that no foam version for women exists [6], while the homepage, product pages and women's study page all present Regaine Frauen Schaum, with the latter describing it as the first 5% minoxidil medicine for women on the market.

### Clinical evidence

Regaine leans heavily on published studies. For the men's foam it cites a US study led by Dr. Anne Elise A. Olsen, published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology in 2007, involving 352 men over 16 weeks. According to the brand, the increase in hair count compared with a placebo was more than four times greater after 12 weeks and more than five times greater after 16 weeks [3].

For women it points to a 48-week study of 381 women by Lucky and colleagues, published in the same journal in 2004, which it says showed a clear increase in hair growth with the 2% solution used twice daily [5]. The brand also reports a survey of 688 women in which 9 out of 10 confirmed the product's effectiveness after 12 months. Kenvue, summarising its Rogaine studies, says nearly 9 out of 10 men and more than 80% of women saw a higher hair count than with a placebo, and that visible results typically take three to four months.

### Limits of the treatment

Independent sources add context that the brand's marketing tends to leave in the background. According to Wikipedia, minoxidil's benefits are real but fully reversible: once treatment stops, hair is lost rapidly, and after 24 weeks density is similar to that of people who took a placebo [9]. The drug therefore has to be used indefinitely to keep its effect. It works best on hair loss at the crown, is less effective over large areas, and its effectiveness has mainly been shown in younger men who have been losing hair for less than five years.

Topical minoxidil can cause skin irritation, itching, dandruff and a temporary increase in shedding; the German website has a page devoted to this "shedding effect". Wikipedia also notes that very few users stick with topical treatment, with almost all stopping within a year, and that the drug is extremely toxic to cats and dogs even in small amounts.

The wider market has also shifted. Low-dose minoxidil taken as a tablet emerged as an off-label hair-loss treatment in 2015 and grew sharply in popularity from 2022, offering an alternative for people who find lotions and foams difficult to use.

Recognition

No awards for Regaine are documented. The German website instead reproduces excerpts from press coverage of minoxidil in general. Der Spiegel is quoted as saying studies have shown that minoxidil regrows some hair in both men and women, and the Tagesspiegel as noting that the German Dermatological Society's guidelines credit it with good effectiveness [2]. Öko-Test is cited for the view that shampoos claiming to stop baldness do not work, while a 5% minoxidil solution does help men. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the television programme taff on ProSieben also feature. Most of these excerpts discuss the active ingredient rather than Regaine by name, and none is dated.

Current status

Regaine is active. Its German website is maintained by Kenvue Germany GmbH, with mandatory product information dated May 2025, and the same brand under its US name, Rogaine, added two new shampoos in 2026. The brand is sold as Regaine across the UK, Europe, Australia and Canada and as Rogaine in the United States, mainly through pharmacies and drugstores.
